Sivapathigaram Tamil Movie
Karu. Palaniappan, the Director gave a good movie in his debut with Parthiban Kannavu. But has been in the wilderness since then, His intentions to send out a strong social message is definitely noteworthy. But the way the message has been packaged is questionable.
Let me get straight into the story. Professor Ilango comes to his native village near Theni, with his college going daughter, Charulatha. He has taken voluntary retirement from his college service and has come to live in his ancestral house. He plans to do research on folk songs and release a collection as a book. His student Sathiyamurthy assists him in this venture.
Charulatha falls for Sathiya, on keenly observing his intellect, humaneness and social awareness. Meanwhile elections are announced to the State Legislature and the parties start finalizing the candidates for the constituencies. When the candidates start filing nominations, the dreadful things happen. Some candidates from both the major parties are murdered and all the candidates get jittery. Lot of candidates withdraw from the fray fearing death. The parties are in a fix on what to do. The Police are on the trace out for the killer. The Election Commission postpones the elections.
When the police tighten their noose and tie loose ends, the killer is traced. The trail leads to Sathiyamurthy and it is found that he is aided in this bloodshed by Professor Ilango. Police arrest Ilango. At the same time Charu reveals her mind to Sathiya during their travel to Hyderabad. Sathiya reveals his undercover deeds. He also tells her about the bitter and gory events which forced himself and Professor Ilango to resort to this task of cleansing the society of the current breed of dangerous, inhuman and selfish politicians.
Sathiya escapes from the police's net and makes another attempt at the Minister. Whether he succeeds in his attempts and was he able to send out the message correctly to the people forms the final pulsating moments. The final moments have been shot well in the Annual Azhagar festival in Madurai.
Vishal as the responsible and studious student and later as an angry young man out to cleanse the society of the evil politicians has done well to improve his standing and meets the expectations of his well wishers. Mamta as his sweet heart fills the role well. But there is not much for her to do. Raghuvaran makes a measured appearance as the Professor after a long time. He as usual carries the weight with ease. Ganja Karuppu as the domestic help is natural as usual and helps create a ripple or two with his comedy.
The music by Vidhya Sagar is excellent. The folk songs especially the ‘ Mullaipaari' song is good. Camera work by Gopinath creates a good canvas for the Director. Editing is good. The old ancestral house of Raghuvaran and the Azhagar Festival are the highlights of the movie.
The movie is above average and a little more care on the narration style, the screenplay and the characterizations could have definitely made it a big hit.
