J.P. Dutta, along with cinematographer Aynanka Bose, takes us on a pilgrimage through Umrao's inner and outer landscape creating perfect visuals to portray her predicament as a 'fallen woman' forever rising above her destiny.

J P Dutta fails miserably in narrating the story; in fact director should know that the era of '3 and half hour' movies is gone. The only 2 things which are good in the movie are: Cinematography, the scenes in Lucknow and other places are shot very well. And Aishwarya Rai, she looks too gorgeous.
