"Nayagan" is a slick, racy cop story with not so well-known action hero J.K Ritheesh playing the lead role. His earlier movie "Kaanal Neer" was a flop and in "Nayagan" he looks far more mature and his role is tailor-made. Inspired by the Hollywood blockbuster "Cellular", Director Saravana Sakthi has the right mix of all the essential ingredients to make the film a good entertainer.Compared with some of the police stories of recent times, "Nayagan" is more thoughtfully packaged. It is sure to go down well with the audience.

Guru (J.K. Ritheesh) is a tough encounter cop who believes in instant justice. Supported by his superior officer (Radha Ravi), he fights to stop trafficking in drugs and girls by a gang of big bad guys. The film begins with scary scenes of dead bodies floating in the underground sewer lines.

Anandraj and his gang are engaged in kidnapping school girls by making them unconscious with drugs. These girls end up falling into the laps of VIPs. Social activist Sriman, who records all this on his video, incurs the wrath of the Anandraj gang. The gang is after Sriman who disappears with the incriminating video clips. Sriman's wife Dr. Sarada (Sangeetha) and their child are abducted by the gang to force Sriman to come out of his hiding. Dr.Sarada in her desperation, tries to call someone for help. She puts together a smashed phone in the room and she dials randomly. She gets connected to Shakthi's (Ramanaa) mobile and informs him of her plight when he was running away with his girlfriend (Keerthi Chawla) on the day of her marriage with another person. Though Sakthi is initially hesitant, he takes up the cause of Dr. Sarada. Shakthi joins hands with Police officer Guru and they both fight the notorious gang.

Ritheesh's performance is creditable and a definite improvement on his dismal acting in "Kaanal Neer". In stunt scenes (he takes on a dozen baddies single-handedly at a time) he proves himself equal to any other recognised action heroes in Kollywood. His acting skills are finely showcased by the director and stunt master Powerfast. As an encounter cop who believes in instance justice, Ritheesh's acting with calm and composed demeanor upholds the dignity of Khaki uniform.

Anandraj, back after a long gap, plays a dual role. It comes as a shock when it is known that he is a police officer himself but on the wring side. Another Anandraj is one who is a paralytic. He plays both the roles with aplomb.

Young Ramanaa gives Ritheesh the right company. Like Ritheesh, he also excels in stunt scenes. Though he has done a few films, he has not made a mark. With "Nayagan" he has come of age and he passes the first stage.

Social activist Sriman, new bridegroom Viyapuri, 'uncle' Santhana Bharathi, Ritheesh's chief Radha Ravi, Pandiarajan and Vijaibabu add to the entertainment value of the film.

Keerthi Chawla appears in a couple of song sequences. Sangeetha as a damsel in distress is impressive.

Music and background score by Maria Manohar deserve appreciation. But songs though nice to hear, serve as a speed breaker. The opening 'build-up' song is an imposition. The proceedings lag towards the end. The climax has too much of gunshots and bloodshed. Over all, the film is worth watching.
