First Shafi with Lollypop and now Rafi-Mecartin with Love in Singapore; it seems these makers of youthful, colourful entertainers have run out of fuel. Love in Singapore is almost sure to nose-dive even before it has taken off. In fact it would be a wonder if it manages to complete a week at the box office.

When an actor like Mammootty goes on repeating himself in such meaningless roles again and again, it doesn't contribute in any way to his growth or evolution as an actor. And it takes the soul out of the performance too.

There are many factors that would lure one to the movie - Rafi-Mecartin, Mammootty, Singapore etc. But as said earlier the directors Rafi and Mecartin seem to have run out of steam, run out of creative ideas. People like Salim Kumar, Bijukuttan, Suraaj Venjaramoodu etc don't do anything new or different or strikingly humorous. Add to it Mammootty's lackluster performance, and you have a film that doesn't impress you in the least.

Machchu, who grew up on the streets of Kochi as an orphan, becomes a wealthy scrap dealer, by dint of hard work. He has as his sidekicks Shukoor and Narayanan, who too had grown up with him on the streets. Then as things are going fine and rosy, comes Andrews Pereira, a rich guy who helps people invest their money in shares and stock. Machchu is soon relieved of a substantial sum. Andrews Pereira then does the vanishing trick along with his daughter Diana.

Machchu is forced to fly to Singapore to get his money back. He also intends to marry Diana, not because he loves her, but as a way to get even with her father. In Singapore, we come across some new characters.

Mammootty gets to do nothing much as Machchu, and in some of the scenes he is simply disappointing. This happens, as mentioned earlier, when an actor is 'forced' to repeat himself. Navneeth Kaur, who does the role of Diana in the film, is also unimpressive. A gifted actor like Nedumudi Venu too gets wasted as Andrews Pereira, a character that will go down as one of his most forgettable ones.

Salim Kumar as Shukoor and Bijukuttan as Narayanan simply do what they are wont to do. The same is the case with Suraaj Venjaramoodu. Jayasurya has hardly anything to do in the film. And Laloo Aalex, who has played the cop in many films, seems to be totally at a loss with the character of Retnam, a top Police Officer in Singapore.

The songs are not catchy. There's nothing to write home about the technical aspects. True, cinematographer Sanjeev Shankar, art-director Boban and other technicians have done a fairly good job; but when the film as a whole goes wrong, these things don't help much. To sum up, Love in Singapore is an utter waste of a movie, and the blame has to be placed squarely at the door of the director duo.
