Salman Khan is an audience's actor and suffice it to say that no matter one reviews his films or not, his fans would queue up outside cinema halls to watch his films. The madness for Salman Khan this time around however has surpassed all boundaries as Ek Tha Tiger has proven to be a complete package, the never before teaming of Salman and Yash Raj Films, the genre of a romantic thriller and the romantic pairing of alleged off screen pair of Salman and Katrina. But if one compares this film to his earlier offerings like the flawed Ready and Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger stands tall and a worthy offering!
In the world of ISI and RAW agents where there's no room for emotions and only ruthless killings to protect their nations information is a RAW Agent Tiger (Salman Khan) who knows nothing but how to defend his opponents. Tiger gets sent off on a mission to keep a watch on a scientist turned professor but while at it, his heart starts fluttering for professor's caretaker Zoya (Katrina Kaif) and romance sparks off. But a RAW agent can neither reveal his identity nor trust anyone. In such a scenario whether Tiger finds his true love or not follows through a series of twists and turns.
Not too long ago there was another spy film that released, however, much against the outrageous flaws of Agent Vinod, Ek Tha Tiger comes out as a linear and sensible storyline. Off-late Salman has been doing some over the top action flicks like Wanted and Dabangg, inane comedies like Ready and silly films like Bodyguard. However, owe it to Yash Raj banner that tears Salman off his run of the mill, over the top potboilers and offers an underplayed yet larger than life offering.
Director -producer Aditya Chopra takes over the mantle of story-writing and puts on the table romance in a very hopeless scenario and director Kabir Khan laps it up with his screenplay and penchant for exploring the unseen locations. So you have Tiger tracing through Iraq, Dublin, Istanbul, Havana amongst others. Their writer-director's teaming however falters in bringing out the novelty factor in the story and easily slips into a predictable domain. Most of the twists and turns in the film can easily be guessed almost 3-4 scenes before they actually happen. Even the climax is very conventional. Moreover, the film proceeds very much on the lines of Hollywood film Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Where the credit lies most to filmmaker Kabir Khan is in the action sequences. Ever since the interviews of the film Kabir has been maintaining that he will bring about the balance between his realistic approach and Salman's over the top antics and he sure does. The first chase sequence in Iraq is splendid and very international with Salman not beating down people to pulp but defending himself and cleverly escaping the situation without getting hurt. Even the rest of the action stunts and chase sequences, not to forget even the ones involving Katrina Kaif, are brilliantly executed. It puts all notions that Indian cinema is much behind Hollywood to rest.
Kabir Khan excels once again in extracting great performances from his actors. While he brings out the charming and endearing romantic appeal of Salman Khan, he also restrains his over acting. Even in case of Katrina Kaif, Kabir very intelligently plays around her one and only expression. As for the rest of the cast, Girish Karnad as Tiger's boss and Ranvir Shorey who plays Gopi, Tiger's aide both do a decent job.
To sum it up, Ek Tha Tiger despite its predictability and flaws is a decently made film and a sure shot winner at the box-office! Go watch the film.
