'Snow White' silent remake is Spain's Oscar candidate

Madrid, Sep 27 (IANS) Silent film "Blancanieves", a rework of the classic fairy tale "Snow White" set in Spain, will represent the country at the Oscars, it was announced here Thursday.


"Blancanieves", directed by Pablo Berger, will represent Spain in the "Best film in a foreign language" category at the 85th edition of the awards, Xinhua reported.


The silent film, shot in black and white, stars actress Maribel Verdu and actor Daniel Gimenez Cacho.


The film beat other hopefuls like police thriller "Grupo 7" and "El Artista y la Modelo" directed by Fernando Trueba, who previously won an Oscar for "Belle Epoch".


Enrique Gonzalez Macho, president of the Spanish Cinema Academy, while announcing the decision Thursday said: "I hope the film has the success it deserves."
