Best Actresses of 2010
Dec 27, 2010 NR
The dearth of heroine-oriented films continues in the Malayalam film industry, and it's disheartening that very few from among the eighty plus films released this year had a noteworthy female role in them. Very few actresses have managed to make an impact amidst these odds, and nowrunning.com lists out the Top Five Actresses of the year 2010.
Swetha Menon
Having made a modest beginning a couple of decades back through Anaswaram, the former Ms. India has indeed come a long way. Once considered a mere model, Swetha has gradually emerged as one of the top notch performers in the industry.
At once daring and gifted, Swetha is an actress whom we love to see on screen. Swetha like Megastar Mammootty, manages to switch between typically commercial and aesthetically sensible films with ease. She was seen in the lovely T.D. Dasan Standard VI B, as well as in Penpattanam. We could forget that cameo that she did for Valiyangadi, and a couple of other guest appearances for films like Kadaksham and Sadgamaya.
Swetha is right there on the top this year among the actresses, and promises to enthrall us even more with Rathinirvedam, come 2011!

Mamta Mohandas
Mamta's career has been a story of survival as well. Post Mayookham and Lanka the actress had almost disappeared from the industry, until she made a comeback through Sathyan Anthikkad's Katha Thudarunnu. Mamta followed it up with other releases as well like Anwar and Nirakazhcha. She appeared in a song for The Thriller as well. On the personal front, the actress revealed that she had been battling with a dreaded disease and that she had managed to conquer it through her perseverance and courage. She crooned a couple of songs, one for Anwar and the other for The Thriller.
Mamta has signed up a few interesting films for the coming year as well, and the future seems all bright for the beautiful actress.

Samvrutha Sunil
Punyam Aham, Happy Husbands, Cocktail, Chekavar - Samvrutha Sunil has been a busy actress in 2010. Samvrutha has managed to break the jinx that surrounded her initially, and has delivered quite a few hits in recent times.
The first hit of the year Happy Husbands had Samvrutha playing a major role in it. However the film that placed her firmly in the big league was Cocktail, in which she played the embittered wife to perfection. Though she has been around for some time now, Cocktail made people sit up and take note of this actress with the charming smile.
Samvrutha is on her way up, and with the right kind of films, could give her competitors a run for their money.

Urvasi
It hasn’t exactly been a comeback for Urvasi, but Mummy and Me reinstated what a wonderful actress she has always been. There was also Sakudumbam Shyamala and the instantly forgettable Best of Luck, but Urvasi proved beyond doubt that her charms were still intact.
One of the best actresses that Malayalam cinema has ever produced, Urvasi is equally at ease with both comic and sentimental roles. She also has the unique power of drawing in an initial audience to the theaters, something that very few actresses have.

Shafna
This very young actress, who made her debut through Katha Parayumbol a few years back, had just two small releases during the year – Athmakatha and Plus Two - both of which were noted for very special reasons.
Athmkatha in which Shafna played the role of a young girl gradually turning blind, is one of the best films of the year, and Shafna's contribution to the same has been quite significant. She has the potential and oodles of talent, and let's hope we get to see much more of this performer next year!
