Industry all set for a quiet Onam season
Sep 1, 2009 NR
Cochin, Sep.1 (NR): Onam in Kerala has always been a time when the big releases clashed at the box office, with some of them even becoming super-hits. But last year, it was a dull kind of affair, with no superstar films making it to the box office. Those that were released didn't do much of business either. Of course there were some good films, but at the box office they couldn't stick on. This time too it's going to be rather dull, with no super-star films making it to the box office once again. No Mammootty, no Mohanlal, no Dileep, no Suresh Gopi; the only stars who are going to make it this time are Jayaram, Jayasurya, Kalabhavan Mani and Mukesh. This year's list of Onam releases includes mostly commercial ventures. A couple of them may turn out to be hits.
Let's take a look at this year's Onam releases.
Kaanakanmani

'Kaanakanmani' could very well be called this year's big Onam release. The film sees actor Jayaram, director Akku Akbar and scenarist Gireesh Kumar teaming up once again after 'Veruthe Oru Bharya', which had made it big at the box office. Padmapriya is the leading lady in the film, which also has Baby Nivedhitha in a key role. The film, basically targeted at the family audience, features cinematography by Vipin Mohan and music by Shyam Dharman. 'Kaanakanmani' is produced by Moser Baer Entertainments in association with Anne Media and will be marketed by Play House.

Produced by Vincent Mekkunnel under the banner of Mekkunnel Creations, 'Decent Parties' has Jagadeesh and Meera Vasudev in key roles and is directed by Abraham Lincoln, PRO-turned-director. The film, which also has Jagathy Sreekumar in a key role and Mukesh in a cameo, is a light kind of entertainer with family sentiments too finding space. The cast for 'Decent Parties' also includes Salim Kumar, Vijayaraghavan, Saikumar, Vincent Abraham, Bijukuttan, Narayanankutty, Zeenath, Devi Chandana etc. Kaloor Dennis pens the script based on story by debutant Suresh Krishna. Shuddharil Shuddhan

Directed by newcomer Jayaraj Vijay, 'Shuddharil Shuddhan' has in the lead role Indrans, who has always been doing comedy roles. Indrans plays the role of a tea-estate worker with a communist ideology. The film focuses on the changes that overtake the life of this die-hard communist, especially with the changing times as the backdrop. Lakshmi Sharma is the heroine. Mukesh also does a key role in the film, which also has in the cast Kalabhavan Mani, Innocent, Suraaj Venjaramoodu, Master Ganapathy, Master Kannan, Baby Shradhdha etc.
The M.A. Nishad-directed 'Vairam', having Pasupathy, Meera Vasudev, Dhanya Mary, Suresh Gopi, Jayasurya, Kalabhavan Mani, Samvritha Sunil, Mukesh etc in key roles, also was supposed to be released during Onam. But, as per recent reports, the film may get delayed. For Mohanlal fans, his Tamil film, 'Unnaipol Oruvan', in which he shares screen space with Kamal Hassan, and which is the remake of the Hindi film 'A Wednesday', will get released soon after Onam. Since most of the Onam releases are low profile ones, the Vikram starrer Tamil film 'Kanthasamy', which is eliciting mixed response in Kerala, will be a competitor at the box office in Kerala.
