The Flavour of the Season: Biopics

Jun 19, 2016 Shweta Kulkarni

Ever since Dirty Picture and Paan Singh Tomar struck gold at the box office, Bollywood filmmakers have latched on to the biopic bandwagon and refused to let it go, digging out one compelling story after the other.

Clearly, the moolah that these real-life inspired stories are raking is making them the much-preferred flavour of the season in Bollywood. And going by the number of biopics that are cooking in different production houses at the moment, one can say that it’s going to be a long season.

Here’s are some biopics to look forward to in the near future…

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

No brownie points for guessing the inspiration for this film. It will be interesting to see how director Neeraj Pandey unfolds our captain cool's (Mahendra Singh Dhoni) journey from a train ticket examiner to the captain of the Indian cricket team. Sushant Singh Rajput's uncanny resemblance to Mahi is definitely going to work in the favour of the film.

Dangal

Based on the life of wrestler and Olympic coach- Mahavir Singh Phogat, Dangal definitely packs the punch as it stars Bollywood's powerhouse performer Aamir Khan in the lead role. The actor has pulled all stops to portray the wrestler, who taught wrestling to his daughters Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat. Geeta Phogat was India's first female wrestler to win the gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, while her sister Babita Kumari won the silver. Click the Movie button below for more info:

Main Khudiram Bose Hun

Backed by a relatively new star cast and directed by Manoj Giri and Bhanu Prakash Jha, Main Khudiram Bose Hun is yet to create a buzz in B-town. However, a film based on the life of one of the youngest revolutionaries - Khudiram Bose, who was hanged at the age of 18, definitely deserves our attention. The film also promises to showcase some never heard facts about Khudiram Bose.

Manto

Director Nandita Das and indie cinema's poster boy Nawazuddin Siddiqui are all set to bring the life of Pakistan's short story writer Saadat Hassan Manto alive on the silver screen through their ambitious project - Manto. The life of this literary legend, who liked to defy norms has always remained an enigma to his many admirers. Let's see, what facets of his life does Nandita highlight in the film. Simran

A story of an Indian-origin nurse, who was called Bombshell Bandit, after she pulled off a series of heist in three American states, indeed makes for an intriguing film plot. And if it stars a feisty actress like Kangana Ranaut, then one can safely say that the film is already sold to full houses. Click the Movie button below for more info:

Haseena

Helmed by Apoorva Lakhia, Haseena is an upcoming biopic based on underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim's sister. While Sonakshi Sinha was earlier supposed to play the titular role, reports are now abuzz that Shraddha Kapoor of Baaghi fame may replace her. Now, whoever plays the lead, it's the story of Haseena aapa, sister of one of the most dreaded Don that has caught our attention. So, let the cameras start rolling now.

Untitled Sanjay Dutt biopic

The roller-coaster life of actor Sanjay Dutt, replete with his struggles of dealing with substance abuse, imprisonment, heartbreaks etc. always had all the materials to turn into a Bollywood film. And thanks to director Rajkumar Hirani, it shall soon be. The PK director has taken the onus of showing Sanjay Dutt's trials and triumphs on-screen and has apparently spent 40 days with Sanjay Dutt before sitting down to finally write the story. Ranbir Kapoor has been roped in to play the titular role.

Untitled Kishore Kumar biopic

Anurag Basu's ambitious project on the maverick actor, director, playback singer, lyricist, composer, and screenwriter has been in the news for a while but is yet to take off. Last we heard that Aamir Khan might replace Ranbir Kapoor, who was initially supposed to play 'Kishore' in the film. Hope this project finally goes on the floor, as the interesting life story of Kishore Kumar deserves to be on celluloid.
