At the end of the day, 'Pottas Bomb' is a firecracker that looks all promising on the cover with a million sparkles on the sky, but which fails to light up. It dies down in the dead of the night, after a bit of a splutter here and there.

There are a few genuinely convincing instances splattered around in 'Pottas Bomb' that makes you believe that its director Suresh Achoos holds fine promise as a film maker. That the film, as a whole, eventually delivers the clamor of a Pottas, despite suggesting that a bomb explosion is round the corner, is another matter altogether.

The film tracks the journey of four young boys who flee from a juvenile home, and discover the big, bad world outside. As the rain comes down heavily on them, the lure of money seems to be the only instinct that drives them forward. Together they team up with a dreaded goon (Indrans), and the pathways that lie ahead seem to be as tough as ever.

The script is a mixed bad really, in that just as you star loosening up to the mood of the film and get used to its slightly shady tone, it stuffs itself with sappy sequences that drive out the fizz in no time. Which is why, the script turns out to be the film's liability, and prevents it from evolving into a somber tale that you really want to lend an ear to.

Romance seems to be wedged into the narrative in a way in which there seems to be no way out. And as much as I am not opposed to romance, I was distraught by the fact that it was slowly, but surely, squeezing out the real thrills that ought to have been there instead.

And even then, the character sketches have a charm about them, that cannot be overlooked. On a closer look, there is even this haziness with which almost all of them have wrapped themselves in, and it's this muddle that paradoxically makes them appealing.

There is always this question as to whether a narrative has to be purposefully intricate. This query arise from the fact that the film that could have very well done perfectly fine by an uncomplicated account almost deliberately makes an attempt to make a point otherwise. The effects are simply artificial, and this fake ambience even works against it.

The hasty ending follows the dip that the film takes in the latter half, and completes the disappointment. The running time of about an hour and forty five minutes is by no means excruciating, though it does not give several grounds on which to be elated either.

A very special word of appreciation for the impressive young cast of the film, Achu Arunkumar,Rohith Menon,Anu Sithara,Vishnu,Rajeev Rajan and Chinchu Mohan who have done a remarkably good job. And Indrans, in the role of a formidable thug is surprisingly believable, which makes us want to redefine our conceptions of toughness. And thanks to these actors, there are times, when the performances save the day.

At the end of the day, 'Pottas Bomb' is a firecracker that looks all promising on the cover with a million sparkles on the sky, but which fails to light up. It dies down in the dead of the night, after a bit of a splutter here and there.
