Director Perarasu's last hit in Tamil was Ajith Kumar's Thirupathi, which also rode solely on the star power of the actor.

One wonders why he has made a comeback at all now with Tihar, a gangster actioner. The film's two main pillars of support are Parthiepan, who plays an estranged international don and Unni Mukunthan, who shines in his role and scores as a performer on par with Parthiepan. The transformation and the character graph of Unni Mukunthan is the same, age-old trope Perarasu and an umpteen numbers of commercial filmmaker have portrayed on screen already.

Parthiepan is seeking revenge for the killing of his family but he plays the role of a hideous villain with this trademark panache. The quintessential wits and punch-lines galore whenever he appears on screen. Unni Mukunthan, who grows to be a protective son of Alexander, breaks the shackles once he confronts the relentless crimes spearheaded by Parthipen. The cat and mouse game then follows and the genre is milked to death by Perarasu's abysmal writing.

The unfathomable cliches Perarasu brings to the fore is beyond tolerable. The editing is quite clunky and disorderly that it makes us think if the editor was underpaid. Interestingly, Tihar is the bi-lingual version of the Malayalam film Samrajyam II: Son of Alexander which marked the directorial debut of Perarasu in Malayalam. Yes, a very forgettable debut. And, the ditto happens in Tamil cinema. A highly forgettable comeback here by Perarasu, a mainstream favorite of top Kollywood actors ten years back.

Akanksha Puri looks pretty with her limited expressions and comes across as a good talent if molded by proper film-makers and offered enough fodder to perform. The supporting cast has done justice to their roles; be it Kadhal Thandapani, who passed away few months back, MS Baskar or Riyaz Khan.

Overall, Tihar is an utterly annoying action drama with endless number of poorly choreographed action sequences.
