M.A.D Hindi Movie
There have been multiple attempts to generate a Step Up in Bollywood. Fast Forward, Let's Dance are a couple of examples. However except ABCD they have completely failed to make a mark. You would wish that these failure serves as lessons for anyone who wants to attempt a dance film. Alas! Paying no heed to the above examples, newcomer Saahil Prem brings his debut film Mad About Dance.
MAD is about Aarav Anand (Saahil) a passionate dance who wants to become a part of Ceasar's dance team and participate in the National Dance Championship. Some scenes and drama later he decides to form his own team and beat Ceasar on his turf. MAD becomes about racism.
I may surprise many but racism often reminds me of a certain Sohail Khan film I Proud To Be An Indian. The premise is same - beating the whites at their home turn, proving supremacy and earning respect.
MAD fails to evoke any emotion as it touches upon racism. Amateurish writing at fault, this film comes across as one completely devoid of a soul. While screenplay hardly takes the film ahead, the characters are stereotypical. So you have a large-hearted Punjabi in the gang as well as a smart South Indian MBA!
There are too many things that do not fall into place. A dance-based film, MAD takes ages to get to dance. And when it does, the dance is not up to the mark for most part. What's worse is that the music never really impresses - a complete failure for a dance film. Acting too leaves a lot to be desired. Lead actors Saahil and Amrit fail to deliver.
The only saving grace in the film are final 20 minutes when we see some remarkable dance performances. The end credits especially are something worth your dollar are French dancer Salah Benlemqawanssa burns up the screen. But for that I would never recommend you to sit for the entire film!
MAD is a complete no! Would recommend that Saahil Prem, in case he wants to make another film, lets professionals handle departments such as music, writing and direction. A passion project does not always translate into a watchable project.
