If only Akku Akbar's cinematic misadventure was half interesting as its title! Wanting in originality and gormless to the core, here is one Mathayi who could spell big trouble for your weekend.

Akku Akbar's 'Mathayi Kuzhappakaranalla' is a film that is a late entrant on screen. If you find yourself asking what's new in the conflict here or in the drama for that matter, do not be surprised, since 'Mathayi Kuzhappakaranalla' is an uninspiring mishmash of much familiar events that are spread out into a predictable tale.

Mathayi (Jayasurya) is an auto rickshaw driver who has the best of everyone's well being in mind. Mathayi wouldn't mind hovering over to extreme ends to help people in distress. Often his naive interferences land himself and the subjects of his affection in trouble, but that doesn't deter Mathayi from being the helpful soul that he is.

Mathayi's helping hand leads Dr. Nandakumar (Mukesh) and his wife Geetha (Lekshmi Gopalaswami) onto crisis land, while the young man strives hard to bail them out of the mess that they are in.

Laughter they say is the best medicine. But when attempts at making you laugh make you smirk and grimace, it's a caution sign that something has gone amiss. With the stale stench of formulae pouring in, there is nothing much you can do, except try your best to salvage an evening that has otherwise been wrecked, with a decent dinner perhaps.

The decrepit script that Akku Akbar has made use of in 'Mathayi Kuzhappakaranalla' is one that shouldn't even be touched with a barge pole. Recycling isn't an offence, but when its thin, repetitive and wearing as it is in 'Mathayi Kuzhappakaranalla' you realize that watching movies could be an obnoxious chore as well.

A few okay lines here or there simply do not suffice to make up an entertaining screenplay. Which is why 'Mathayi Kuzhappakaranalla' is a stinker on almost every conceivable level. And it doesn't help one bit that even the humour sounds perfunctory right from the start. Which is why despite an impressive cast, the film is as dreary and charmless as it gets.

The unfortunate thing about 'Mathayi Kuzhappakaranalla' is that with not a sequence that you haven't been previously exposed to, the film tires you out with its extreme obviousness. The infinitely small doses of amusement could very easily be missed as well, if you aren't being attentive enough.

Sometimes the most judicious of actors commit the most unthinkable of actions. I'm talking of actor Jayasurya with a well-thought out line-up of films, in his latest offing 'Mathayi Kuzhappakaranalla' that suffocates you beyond belief. It remains a mystery to me as to what must have prompted the promising actor to take up the role, as it is immersed head deep in a swamp of formulaic sequences from which surfacing seems impossible.

All said and done, Jayasurya does give in his best to Mathayi, though Mathayi himself is unworthy of the actor. Mukesh, Bhama and Lekshmi Gopalaswami are strictly adequate in their respective roles. No whopper performances that would astound you are around, and the rest of the cast sleepwalk through the film.

If only Akku Akbar's cinematic misadventure was half interesting as its title! Wanting in originality and gormless to the core, here is one Mathayi who could spell big trouble for your weekend.
