Anyone out there who has been tormented by the much familiar craving to settle a score or two would immediately relate to Mahesh and his story of the discarded Size 8 Lunar Chappals. As Jimcy murmurs aloud, men folk could indeed be bizarre - an exhilarating bit of truth that make their tales exceptional as these.

In all likelihood Mahesh Bhavana (Fahadh Faasil) in Dileesh Pothen's elegant directorial debut 'Maheshinte Prathikaaram' would not have heard of Muhammed Ali or his words that if you lose a big fight, it will worry you all your life and will plague you until you get your revenge. How strange then, that it is indeed this unquenchable desire for vengeance which forms the crux of his life and the film that elucidates what uncanny creatures men could be!

The misty little town of Prakash has been home to Mahesh Bhavana, who runs a studio along with Babychan (Alancier Lay). Nurturing dreams of marrying his school mate Soumya (Anusree) who has since then evolved into a nurse, Mahesh lives a peaceful life clicking passport size photographs and enjoying the enviable status of the official local photographer at weddings and funerals.

It so happens at times that an event sets off a series of occurrences that you would never imagine would have a bearing on your life, and yet when you find yourself right in the midst of it realize that life could somewhat resemble a ping pong ball that has totally lost its course. Bashed up by a stranger whom he later finds out to be a welder named Jimson (Sujith Shankar), Mahesh vows to wreak vengeance, and casts away his slippers until the task is done.

Writer Syam Pushkaran banks heavily on the genuineness of the incident and keeps the proceedings realistic to the core. It's indeed a marvel as to how a basic episode (a true event, for that matter) as the one depicted in the film could compellingly be drawn out into a full length feature film with not a dull moment in sight.

There is the magical trick at work here that keeps you hooked on the narrative, despite the plot having no intention to shower you with stunning disclosures. This is a script that diffuses a light charm throughout, and which relies a great deal on character development. Replete with a host of key characters that rally around Mahesh, the script employs some quick-hit mirth that is out-and-out engaging.

The priorities that the screenplay obviously has are possibly surprising, and the alternatives that it offers for the banal conformities heartening. It comes a full circle for Mahesh with love, heartbreak and love yet again, and the bruises heal swiftly as life moves ahead in full steam, unmindful of the bumps and knocks delivered.

I wouldn't exactly call it a comeback when it comes to Fahadh, since the actor who has already proven his mettle with a diversity of sturdy performances in the last few years merely appears to have been on a few-wrong-film-choices break. It's refreshing hence to see the wonderful actor come up with a highly nuanced performance in 'Maheshinte Prathikaram'; one that ironically lets him wreak sweet vengeance on those hastily penned write-offs.

Perhaps never in recent times have I guffawed like I did on a few scenes in 'Maheshinte Prathikaaram', and all of them involve Chrisbin (Soubin Shahir), the new Photoshop wizard whom Babychan employs at the studio. This is an actor with an extremely rare combo of innocence and impishness writ large on his face, and Soubin Shahir has us in splits with his droll retorts and wisecracks.

Anusree as Soumya plays the ditching lover to perfection while Aparna Balamurali breezes in like a whiff of fresh air, with an ineffable depiction of Jimcy. There are noteworthy supporting acts from a range of actors as Alancier Lay, Sujith Shankar and Jaffer Idukki and the remarkable young actor (whose name I couldn't find) who plays Babychan's daughter in the film. Shyju Khalid is the man behind the camera who surprises us yet again with his stunningly rich visuals, and Bijibal reiterates with a dazzling musical score that he is simply one of the best composers that we have today.
