Conventions of leading life are laid out by the society. But is it really true, that the conventions or systems of living are single handedly decided by the society we dwell in? As individuals why don't we have the ability to redefine the laws of the society? Why can't we deal with the rights and wrongs our own way? Niloy (Joydeep Sengupta) answers these questions, and breaks the naturals set ahead by the society. The normalcy and conventions of the society simply takes a back seat, in front of Niloy's willpower to fight the societal norms and his will to 'live and let live', makes society shy away.

Director Sumit Das's Jijibisha is the story of Niloy's love. That redefines conventions and simply does not obey what's normal. Niloy returns to Kolkata and decides to enter into a contractual marriage with Priyanka (Sreelekha Mitra). This marriage is not justified by the society, owing to the fact that Priyanka is an outcast in her own rights, as she is a call girl. An escort can't of course maintain a mainstream life by becoming someone's wife. While on the other hand Niloy has to make his long time girlfriend Rachana (Sayani Datta) understand his decision. Caught between this tug of war, Niloy and Priyanka tries to find their own niche within the society that is too judgmental towards them.

The film with its twists and turns is interesting and takes a heart-warming angle to love. The film suddenly turns a little lose towards the climax. Apart from the not so remarkable style of filmmaking, the film also does not appear too neat at several instances.

Sreelekha Mitra is flawless and seamless in her portrayal of the woman of resolve, who has emotions much like the rest, that the society ignores and that later on she expresses in Niloy's company. NRI Joydeep Dasgupta is too natural, much like stalwart Soumitra Chatterjee. Sayani Datta is however a misfit in her portrayal of the loyal girlfriend. The film does cast an innocent magic and weaves a story of love, which is bound to stay in our heart for long. But that ultimate icing of perfection is but missing.

Seeing Joydeep Dasgupta and Sreelekha Mitra together for a film, along with Soumitra Chatterjes is a nice treat indeed. Watch Jijibisha for some powerful performances.
