'Onnam Loka Mahayudham' like many major wars that have been fought in the world, is deluded by a reason that it believes to be true. When it finally draws to a close, leaving much destruction and damage in its wake, the phoney cause is all that remains.

There is not much of a story to celebrate here, and it would perfectly suffice to say that it concerns a medico who goes by the name Jacob (Tovino Thomas) who has come up with a drug that he hopes to sell off for a fortune. The hotshot lady cop Tara (Aparna Gopinath) is quite sure as to what she needs to do, and the stage for a thriller is all set.

It remains another story altogether, that it doesn't rain excitement in this film, that agonizingly progresses at a restful pace. This is a film that doesn't think much of the viewers' cognitive abilities and as such, takes everything including their diligence for granted.

Someone seems to claim that a world war is being fought, and when it looks like the one in the film, without as much as a whimper, one wonders if the makers did get their title right. I guess the intention must have been to suggest a battle of colossal proportions, but somehow neither the film nor its tale manages to get it across.

I'm surprised that the film does not manage to appear even a wee bit mysterious. It throws caution to the winds and decides once and for all that enough is enough. And then for the worse, it dives deep into a jumble of uncertainties from which it never again surfaces.

It's no wonder then that at the end of it all, one cares very little for the characters that you have been watching on screen for the last couple of hours. This is an errant misfire from the director without doubt, one that he would hopefully make up for, in his films that are to come.

It's not just a lack of perspective that sends 'Onnam Loka Mahayudham' to the list of also-ran movies, but also a severe deficiency in the vibes that makes you want to appreciate the honesty behind the effort. While it remains that every film is made with an objective to be lauded, the dismaying ordinariness of some become blatantly evident only when they grace the screens.

I wouldn't really like to see an actor like Aparna Gopinath in a film as this, but then, good actors do tend to make bad choices at times. Tovino Thomas has impressive looks, and deserves something infinitely better. Joju George is there, just as he is around in several other flicks that we have recently seen him in.

Just as there aren't any specific surprises in store when it comes to the performances, 'Onnam Loka Mahayudham' displays a mediocrity in the technical departments as well. There is nothing spectacular about the cinematography or the musical score, while one does tend to wish that the editing was crisper.

There are times when one does feel that the film must have been conceptualized as a highly ambitious one, but must have got demoted to its current stature in the process of execution, as is the case with Onnam Loka Mahayudham'. Most wars aren't meant to be fought. And here is another one that further proves the argument.
