Mystery. Supernatural. Paranormal thrills. Showcasing disappearances, murder, quest to find someone, go deep within the hideous crime to find a trace of the murderer or kidnapper etc have become a trend for the recent Bengali films. Some make it decent, some spoil the intent, some burn the story with execution and some really deserve the accolades, while some do it like debutante Subhabrata Chatterjee.

Manihara is the story of a disappearance. Monideepa (Sohini) is the wife of industrialist Arun Chowdhury (Neel). A strange letter and she disappears. To investigate this disappearance of his wife Arun takes resort of former CBI officer and private investigator Rudrajit Roy (Chiranjeet). But the story is not as simple as it seems. The film begins two years ahead of the disappearance and goes back to trace the eerie story.

Director Subhabrata really deserves credits for making Manihara a value for money watch. Many who have had a taste of the Tagore story in Ray's Teen Kanya will not be disappointed to see a longer and smarter version of the same story in colour. Same however is an unfitting term when it comes to Chatterjee's Manihara. Rather we can appropriately say that the film uses the basic storyline as the backbone. There are twists that turn at the right moments. There are turns that twist the mystery scene a little around the turns. But there are a few loose ends also. We can however keep that aside owing to the debutante's effort of making a thrill packed film with stalwarts of the industry.

Music of Manihara sets the film on the right track and plays the flute preparing you for the thrilling journey. What rolls out as a mystery narrative at edges begins to take shape of a psycho thriller. The actors are pragmatic and pull off the film with extreme ease. Chiranjeet is serious and once again brings out his seasoned self on screen with beauty. Sohini is too good as Monideepa. She perfectly fits the mould of Monideepa leaving behind Ray's heroine with her demure yet lusty self.

Allow your mind to walk along the alleys of mystery and play its own mindgame. Enjoy Manihara for its thrills and frills. The chills will keep you glued and will make you wait for the ending.
