Mohanlal laboriously carries another underwhelming film on his shoulders.

B Unnikrishnan's Villain is an anachronistic film that more than shares its genes with his own works of the past (read: IG, Grandmaster).

Belonging to the old-fashioned investigative thriller genre, Villain is another star vehicle you can watch in your sleep. The director leaves nothing to the audience's imagination. He just wants you to sit back and enjoy the drama on screen. But is it worth enjoying if the audience is always a few steps ahead of the story?

Villain exposes one irregularity which could be potentially blasphemous to acknowledge, thanks to fandom. It is that Mohanlal and Manju Warrier are way past the insane chemistry they once shared. It is stressful to see the arguable "King" and "Queen" of Malayalam cinema pull a lifeless version of a loving married couple. The writing and direction also have a say in how poorly their relationship is expressed before us. But, note that in the same film, Mohanlal and Manju Warrier can suddenly turn into acting champions when they have to act out very primal and universal emotions. Sadly, such scenes don't come too often in a film that is too busy mimicking the crime movies of Hollywood and the like, especially in its unnecessarily English-heavy, theatrical dialogues.

Tami

l star Vishal plays the one-dimensional antagonist who has to be the Joker to Mohanlal's Batman. But, this is not a battle between smart individuals at any point. It's a boring war of words where our hero, who can word his ideas more stylishly, is obviously the winner. The exchange of opposing beliefs in itself is soulless. And all we can do is observe how Mohanlal juggles his star power and acting skills with panache yet again.

Villain maybe a film for the masses but taking the sensibilities of its audience for granted is unacceptable. Its message on morality hits the right note but at the cost of skillful storytelling.

First of all Villain is not a bad movie like Velipadinte Pusthakam or 1971 Beyond Borders. Also it is not a great movie like Drishyam or Oppam. But Villain just takes a new path of thriller that may get followed by other movie makers in the future. The movie is a slow paced one and not having a great thriller mood also. Despite some directional errors Villain is a fair film that you can watch once. The main plus point is Mohanlal sir's acting and some dialogues.

villain got what it deserved-a dull welcom. The all time great director UNNI talks like kurosovo n films like vinayan. Big words n big budget dont make a movie good.Villain aspires to be a thriller but miserably lacks thrills, and as an emotional drama, it lacks the needed intensity n story. The biggies tried to mix both by putting it in the very old bottle and eventually produced a weird thing that genuinely occupies a no man's land..the film neither entertains fans nor family but bores both well
