Venu strikes gold again with a film that is littered with strong cinematic layers. It may not have the best of drama or entertainment to keep you hooked, but it has a mischievous and teasing soul that will leave a cerebral afterthought. One that is riddled with a maelstrom of deep, intense theories and ambiguities.

Carbon is an engaging adventure about a greedy man with a good heart searching for treasure in a jungle. We feel immersered in the jungle and comes out as much as perplexed as its protagonist. Its a bumpy film, that will satisfy adventurists. Its fair to say sum of its parts are better than the whole. Its a Fahad Faazil show. Its simply brilliant acting, and one of his finest. On a visual level, I was reminded of "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" a Werner Herzog film. That does not happen fluke.

K U Mohanan has copied remarkably the visual beauty of the Western Ghats through his camera lens. The sounds of forest have been captured well by the recordist. Setting that apart, there is not much in the movie which could conform to your expectations from a veteran director like Venu. The director should have realized that most of the screenplay was only a wild goose chase and cut it short, saving the valuable time of the audience. Finally, what has gold to do with carbon?
