Pyaar Prema Kaadhal Tamil Movie

Feature Film | 2018 | UA | Comedy, Romantic
Critics:
Pyaar Prema Kaadhal is a decent attempt from the first time director. However, with the theme that it has attempted to narrate, it could have been elevated to a greater height with a crisper narrative and better actors.

If "OK Kanmani" set a precedent for "live-in" relationships, "Pyaar Prema Kaadhal" has attempted to make deeper inroads into analysing the relationship between being in love and consummating the same with marriage. Is marriage an absolute need or is it to stay clear from the moral policing from the society at large?

Sreekumar falls for Sindhuja in the most cliched office romance that left the first half stale. Though both of them share the same cabin (and at times the same bed), their values and attitude towards life are different. Sree wants to marry Sindhu, while she bluntly refuses for the same and instead wants to live-in with Sree. Also, she believes that a "commitment" would pose challenges to pursue their respective dreams in life. This battle between the individuals continues until their respective views change. Whether it is for the good or bad was left for the audience to decide.

I felt director Elan had wasted the movie, especially the first half that piled up old cliches to establish the romance between an ultra modern girl and a boy next door. It was a huge drag, and the songs made it worse (though one could acknowledge that YSR is the producer without additional songs). Repetition of cosy interludes between the lead pair, scene after scene drained off our energy.

It's the second half where the story finds a direction (and we could somewhat sense the presence of a director). When Sree and Sindhu move in together, they are put to the test with the practical difficulties, a clash of lifestyles and so on.

Even the famous climactic marriage (of one of the leads marrying another person) scene doesn't have that masala fervour. It goes through without anyone's hindrance. Life goes on until the individuals realise what's more important in life. I wish the director had made a crisper screenplay without unnecessary songs and brought these thought-provoking bits much earlier into the proceedings.

The movie was a huge letdown when it came to dialogues and performance. Harish and Raiza came across as mere showpieces who walked the screen holding their "Bigg Boss" tags firmly pinned to their chest. An office manager who supports a colleague's love affair in a meeting room setup was an age-old trope that failed to kick off any ripples in the screenplay.
