Contessa Malayalam Movie

Feature Film | 2018
Critics:
Appani Ravi as Chandu exudes supreme energy in this trite and monotonous tale of vendetta. The sound and fury signify nothing as there is hardly any earnest attempt to tell a good story.

Written and directed by debutant Sudeep. E.S, 'Contessa' follows the default format of typical action drama. The ornate premise is filled with action sequences and dance numbers in the guise of jazzing up the events. Here an innocent youth, Chandu, played by Appani Sarath, is trapped into the snare of fraud and illegal activities. The movie glides along the surface of predictable issues. While immersing into them, they give us a sense of bitter taste and insipid experience.

'Contessa' is uneven in tone, leaving us in exasperated situations with cliched sequences. The justification for the happenings lacks originality and the dramatic pattern of acting sullies the enjoyment. At the movie's midpoint, the script finds some stability but this consistency vanishes so soon.

Appani Ravi plays Chandu, an instructor of a driving school, who was accidentally caught by police for helping his friend Saddam (Zinil Zainuddin) in his unsuccessful attempt to marry his own uncle's daughter. An outsider in their family, Saddam's relatives complaint against Chandu to the police and subsequently, he was jailed. Fortunately, Chandu is saved from jail by a sand-mining mafia don Jayan, essayed by Sreejith Ravi.

Jayan gets enough support from police officer Philip (Sunil Sughada) to transport illegal sand. As Chandu's voiceover notes, life becomes extremely different after you are taken into custody by the police. Chandu is used by Jayan for illegal works and by this time, he falls in love with Jayan's daughter, played by Athira Patel. When Chandu moves away from Jayan over an incident, it marks the beginning of more troubles in Chandu's life. He also enters into the smuggling of gold due to circumstances.

It is a racy and zippy action drama with the blaring background score by Gopi Sunder amplifying the commotion. Appani Ravi as Chandu exudes supreme energy in this trite and monotonous tale of vendetta. The sound and fury signify nothing as there is hardly any earnest attempt to tell a different story.

While Sarath proves to be the grace of the film, Sreejith Ravi as a ruthless villain creates a dramatic impact. Nevertheless, Hareesh Peradi as Adiga has an impressive appearance. There are a number of things more unpleasant to look at than the cliched story. It's an undemanding creation as well as a passable affair altogether.
