The subject is not alien to us. But 'Kettiyolaanu Ente Malakha' enjoys a cozy status owing to its delightful premise and treatment. Shored up by charming performances, the ascent is steady keeping everything in fine fettle. The platter has a tender and familiar tale but its riveting package with rhythmic pace hardly allows you to digress your attention. Though the movie sticks to the frontiers of a typical family drama, debutant director Nisam Basheer infuses a refreshing touch to his narration enabling the uneventful plot to sparkle satisfactorily.
Set in a high range village in Idukki, 'Kettiyolaanu Ente Malakha' follows the life of Sleevachan, played by Asif Ali, who is an ardent farmer. Forced by his four sisters, mother Eliyamma (Manohari Joy) and circumstances, 35-year-old Sleevachan agrees for his marriage. His friend Kuttichan (Jaffer Idukki) brings the proposal of a well-educated girl for the tenth class passed Sleevachan. In an interesting and informal boy-meet-girl ceremony, his marriage with Rincy (Veena Nandakumar) is fixed.
The conflict in the tale is exposed after the marriage of Sleevachan, who finds that he is in a dilemma, mentally. Written by Aji Peter Thankam, 'Kettiyolaanu Ente Malakha' discusses a common issue that needs to be addressed openly among newly-wed couples. Albeit the main conflict appears to be a tad less intense, the package is simple and delightful. All the scenes are well-conceived with a purpose while handling such a sensitive theme. The nature of the plot shows signs of preachy elements but Nisam skillfully refrains from entering into such a vast terrain. Asif is perfectly treated by the director, and the actor simply melts with the character passionately.
Here the efforts taken by Asif to transform from his familiar mien and expressions are appreciable. He beautifully conveys the mental agony and humiliation the protagonist undergoes in his marital life. Debutante Veena Nandakumar appears as a confident performer and she complements adequately with Asif in portraying the lead characters. The actress expresses no qualms or perplexity in imbibing the trauma of Rincy in the decisive phase of her life.
The content has the usual blend of incompatibility and emotional struggles of married life. The script also emphasizes on the fact that understanding and openness are the keywords for marital life. The strong fetters of relationships are portrayed in 'Kettiyolaanu Ente Malakha' with meticulous precision, and Sleevachan finds himself difficult to sever it. His deep bonding with his mother, sisters, and friends underlines the innocence of a rustic youth.
The progress of the movie is through a sensitive route, sans creating any unnecessary hullabaloo. This creative discipline elevates it to the realm it deserves rightfully. Shortcomings like lack of sharpness in the major conflict are negated through the appealing and convincing presentation. It has ample local flavor and a sincere approach.
