Director duo Akhil Paul and Anas Khan in their debut showcase a crime investigation by embracing nuances of forensic methods. In that aspect, 'Forensic', also written by the pair, has a new flavour as a crime thriller. Though they follow the trite pattern of the genre, the directors also have tried to introduce a surprising element. The theme is seldom harnessed well beyond creating the milieu of suspense. Beginning with a murder incident, the following events act as the aftermath of a person's psycho issues.

Tovino Thomas essays Samuel John Kattukkaran, a medico-legal advisor, who is assigned to support the investigation team of police led by Ritika Xavier (Mamta Mohandas) in the case of mysterious murders of girls. But the path that leads to the answers to the 'whodunit' question exposes the directors' inept involvement in writing.

The probe into the case has connections with the life of Ritika, who is living with her daughter after the divorce. Her ex-husband Xavier John (Saiju Kurup) is the elder brother of Samuel. The turn of events, though seemingly fresh, lack conviction and originality. Samuel joins the investigation team when a little girl mysteriously disappears from a dance school. Shikha (Reba Monica John) also joins the team as his assistant. Later, the dead body of the missing girl was found dumped.

Ritika shows her displeasure to Samuel due to her past life experience with his family. When similar kinds of abductions take place, the police realise that they have a serial killer as their target. Now a twist that actually gatecrashes 'Forensic' and it forcefully makes you to digest the story of a psychopath.

The structure of the screenplay is such that forensic evidence becomes decisive rather than the familiar tale of police nabbing the perpetrator through interrogation. While that difference gives a freshness to the narration, the placing of victims and hunters is same as that of any other thriller. The package gives ample room for Tovino to establish his mien and demeanor as a responsible forensic expert. Samuel is a family man too and it comes to light when he tries to reunite Xavier and Ritika on a couple of occasions.

Albeit showing motherly affection convincingly, Mamta as a police officer has nothing specific to brag about her onscreen appearance. 'Forensic' is all about the mysterious disappearance of girls and their subsequent murders. When the police grope in the dark, a forensic expert's intervention solves the puzzle. It is the slipshod writing and casual treatment that pose hurdles on this thriller's way. Jakes Bejoy's background score, which is too loud quite often, is mediocre. Akhil George has handsomely contributed with his visuals.
