Mayookham, a film directed by Hariharan, which debuts new faces Saiju and Mamta in the lead roles, was scheduled to hit the screens end September, but the release has been re-scheduled because films such as Naran, Bharatchandran IPS, and Nerariyan CBI released for Onam, have been running successfully.

Hariharan’s films are usually wrapped in secrecy until release. From what has been gathered from the grapevine, Mayookham’s story revolves around Unnithan (played by Saiju), the only son of Vasudevan Namboothiri and Devaki Andarjanam. Against the expectations of staid Namboothiri parents, Unnithan becomes the ring leader of the local band of hoodlums. All efforts turn him round are futile.

In the course of their reckless lives, the gang members insult Indira (played by Mamta), who along with her friend Nalini had come to the local temple to worship. Indira, who has just returned from Australia, is the only daughter of Dr. Balakrishnan, a well respected person in the neighborhood. Indira however does not get provoked, because she recognizes Unni as her close childhood friend, even though he does not remember her. Her recollections of early childhood and her understanding of the present predicament of Unni’s family, draws her to him, eventually changing him into a new persona.

Hariharan has a number of successful films to his credit, among them Sargam, Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha, Nakhakshadhangal (in which Monisha got the National Award), and Panchangni. But these films had a common factor, namely story by M.T. Vasudevan Nair. Hariharan has produced other films like Oliyambukal (starring Mammootty) and Prem Poojari (starring Boban Kunjacko), which had some one other than MTV doing the storyline, and they did not fare too well at the box office.

With Hariharan himself handling the script in Mayookham, it remains to be seen whether it will go the way of these films. Hariharan also handles the lyrics in association with Mancombu Gopalakrishnan. Ramachandra Babu wields the camera. Bombay Ravi is the music director, as he usually is in Hariharan’s films. V.T. Vijayan does the editing. The film is produced by KRG Arts and to be released by KRB Enterprises.
