The love story of Shakuntala and Dushyant is so familiar, from textbooks, comics, stage and screen versions, that it has become part of our cultural DNA. If a film-maker thinks he can make it his own by producing a 3D version with excessive CGI, he achieves nothing but overkill.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu starrer is an anachronistic costume drama. What finally lifts up Shaakuntalam during the climax is Allu Arjun’s daughter Allu Arha playing Bharata. With her cute, charismatic presence and well managed dialogues, she brings warmth and freshness to the screen.

Soulless Epic. There is a genuine and honest attempt from Gunasekhar to present a mythological story to the millennials. But he fails to bring enough drama to the proceedings to hold the attention. More than the visual effects, the superficiality of the core emotions is Shakuntalam’s undoing. Still, you can try it if you are interested in the genre but have the expectations accordingly.

Epic Bore! "Shaakuntalam" falls short on all counts, whether as a visual extravaganza or as a good mythological drama. The narration is tedious, and the 3D effects are dreadful. The ‘soul’ is missing in this glitzy attempt.
