'Jiivi' was released in 2019 and was a sleeper hit. Its draw is a segment of audiences who appreciate intelligent thrillers, which made it a runaway success. Also, Vetri, the leading man of the movie has since enjoyed a reputation for choosing sensible scripts. He has built a niche audience for himself. Success in the first part with a loose end calls for a sequel.

'Jiivi 2' kicks off ten months after the first part ends. So, the same characters from the first part grace the screen in this one too. We get a recap of the first part for the new audience who watch the sequel.

Saravanan (Vetri), in an attempt to get himself out of the miseries brought in by his deeds, marries Kavitha (Ashwini), who is visually challenged. Life treats Saravanan quite well for some time. He gets to meet his buddy Mani (Karunakaran), and they both vibe well. Things start turning ugly when Saravanan decides to pursue his wicked ways to make ends meet.

He gets sucked into the circle or triangle of misery one more time. He has to hunt for answers with dubious clues and riddles. As predicted, all the incidents that take place seem to be connected by coincidence. An act leads to another one, and so on. Family emotions also take a toll on Saravanan and push him to the edge. Did he get out of the miserable jinx, or did he succumb to it?

The connection between the events is the film's biggest strength and weakness. Strength because the connected sequences were interesting. Weakness because we've seen this pattern in the first part, and watching a similar one playing out one more time was not as exciting as it should be.

Also, some questionable knots were left loose. Mani, who returns after eloping with Saravanan's jewels, returns to Saravanan, and they both get along well. Saravanan does not even question his friend. While one could praise their bond, it goes against the movie's morality compass.

Jawahar (Nassar's younger brother) plays the role of a cop. The role demanded a much more serious actor. He seems to be no match for his brother's natural screen presence. Vetri was in his usual elements and put up a decent show. Mime Gopi, Rohini, and Karunakaran were solid in their respective supporting roles.

The movie's technicalities were decent, but nothing noteworthy. It is shot on a budget, and the same reflects on screen with the mediocre lighting and staging. The movie has certainly not lived up to its potential compared with its first part. However, the length, and a fair share of thrills engages us for the entire 122 minutes.

Jiivi 2 is a direct-to-OTT feature film that streams on Aha Tamil OTT platform.
