"Nammanna' is a huge let down despite being made in extravagant fashion. The hugely spent money is a waste of effort and it is painful to see an extremely competent actor like Sudeep being misused so blatantly in the film. The film is a remake of Telugu Hit "Anna' which was remade to Hindi as "Bhai'a decade ago. But this version of the film will certainly go down as the worst presentation, though even the Hindi film had bitten the dust earlier. It is a weak film from the word go, despite boasting a big star cast and spending huge expenditure on the project.

Director Shankar has worked for the film as though he is directing a Telugu film and narrative techniques are certainly peculiar to the Telugu film industry. You find a majority of Telugu artists and technicians working for this film including well known artists like Kota Srinivasa Rao, Subbaraju and comedian AVS.

Like the majority of Telugu films, you have two

heroines of the film imported from Mumbai. The

photographer, art director and the editor are also

from the Telugu film industry. There is also a

villainous role for Ashish Vidyarthi who works more in South Indian language films than in Hindi films. The film certainly lacks the native flavour that is certainly required to attract a large number of audience to the theatres. The hero comes to the city of Bangalore and he is shown as working as a driver of a horse driven vehicle. Bangalore has put an end to the horse driven vehicles nearly four decades ago.

The story of the original Telugu film had revolved around the exploitation of tribal people and how an innocent tribal turns into an extremist because of the police, politician and mafia nexus. Hundreds of films with such stories have been seen by the Kannada audience who have the opportunity to see films of different languages.

Another problem with "Nammanna' is the lack of

continuity in the film as the Censor Board has used its scissors mercilessly and has unceremoniously deleted many objectionable portions and dialogues in the film.It has dramatically altered the strength of the film since the narration looks jaded in its new edited avatar. There was another Kannada film "Kashi' that was released just seven months ago with Sudeep which had more or less the same story told in a different fashion. It is surprising as to how Sudeep accepted either "Kashi' or "Nammanna' which had the same plot.

But there are some good points in the film. Sudeep has done well in the emotional sequences of the film and the child artist playing the role of his brother also comes out good. The song sequences shot in London are well photographed and the fight compositions are good. But these little good points go to drain because of the inept handling of the script that was done two decades ago.Certainly this film could have been invested with some fresh ideas.

Sudeep is an innocent tribal who lives in a tribal

belt along with his loving brother. He offers some water to a suspected naxalite who has been chased by some policeman. The police chief harasses Sudeep which makes him to move to the city along with his brother. In the city he becomes a pawn in the hands of rowdies and politicians. His innocence is liked by a teacher who loves him.Sudeep loses his brother to the atrocities of a don who controls the city

mafia. He marries the teacher as per the wish of his brother. An enraged Sudeep shows his strength and becomes a don himself to serve the poor people.

Sensing that Sudeep has become too popular with the people, the politician united the warring mafia factions to wage a war against Sudeep and his gang. Finally Sudeep emerges winner after vanquishing all the villains.

Sudeep once again comes out with a good show, but he can not salvage this film. Anjala Jhaveri is wasted in the film, while the other heroine Flora Saini is used for some skin show most of the time she presents on the screen.Mukyamanthri Chandru, Kota Srinivasarao and Sub
