Vanakkam Thalaiva largely deals with the ill effects of drunken driving on the society. Debutant director Shakthi Paramesh has elegantly churned a movie that engages the enthusiasm throughout the film.

Sathyaraj does turn in a decent performance by doing what he is best at: mocks social satire, scorns at politicians and rebuffs the present day actors. Vivek as a comedian has piqued the interests of the movie buffs by balancing the ironic with ribald dialogues.

The movie starts with a lorry driver Manickam (Sathyaraj) disguised as a sardarji, who kidnaps Divya (Susan), Mano's (Abbas) girlfriend. He then foils Mano's every attempts to trace his lover by appearing in different costumes and puzzling him.

Mano keeps seeing the kidnapper in various disguises and finally figures out that he's Manickam. In order to rescue Divya, Mano takes the help of his friend Aruchamy (Vivek), a suspended police officer from Pondicherry. Eruchamy joins Manickam as his lorry cleaner and finally succeeds in finding the place where Divya s help captive.

As they enter the house with policeman, the story takes a turn as Divya claims that she is Manickam's wife and refuses to recognize Mano. Puzzled by the quick turn of events, Mano becomes crazy.

When Aruchamy confronts Manickam, he relates the story in a flash back.

Sathyaraj always has come out with a good performance. Abbas has got a good role after a long time and has made the most of this opportunity. Susan looks much better in this film than in her debut film. Pranathi has also got a decent role. Vivek who has equal footage as the hero evokes laughter with his double meaning dialogues and he succeeds to some extent.

Venniradai Murthy and Shakeela too add to the risque element in the film. Abinayashree and Babylona sizzle in an item number.

Sakthi Paramesh has tackled a good theme, but could have given it a better treatment. He successful to maintain the suspense element with his novel narration style.

Editor Saisuresh crisp cuts and Suresh Devan's lens.

The failing points are weak screenplay and cliched climax. The movie is clearly meant for frontbenchers.
