Ranbir Kapoor plays a breakup service specialist in Luv Ranjan's "Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar." When anyone wants to break out of their relationship, they approach Ranbir's Mickey, and he maps a way out for them. He does it with a code of ethics that involves making that person swear they are no longer in love. He does not have the same code of ethics when it comes to pricing for his service, though. One breakup plan costs his clientele lakhs. This probably explains why Mickey is the "makkaar" (a deceitful person) in the title.

Mickey believes that he is only doing a favor for the other person in the relationship, who is not his client. Fair enough. But what will happen to Mickey when he falls in love? As in, how will his girlfriend react if she finds out that this is what Mickey does for a living? These questions come hurling at us as Mickey meets his potential lover, Shraddha Kapoor's Tinni.

It is not quite the usual "meet-cute" moment, because Mickey is savage and has such a direct approach when it comes to romance. On the other hand, Tinni is salacious and even asks Mickey to "check her out." It would seem Shraddha Kapoor's loose outfit and bare back are enough to make Mickey fall in love with her. At this point in the movie, I remembered an Instagram reel where a human voice, dubbing one of two cats in an embrace, says, "Come on, Vicky!" "Give me a hickey." This is to say, sex and romance seem so playful and casual for the protagonists of Luv Ranjan's film.

The movie has an interesting premise. Luv Ranjan's story works as an antithesis to the plot of a film like Kal Ho Na Ho or Partner, where either Khan, Shah Rukh and Salman, acts as a love guru for their best friend. Ranbir's character is the antithesis to the love guru. "Breakup specialist" is about as professional as I can get when it comes to describing him. In another universe, like a Ram Gopal Varma universe, he may as well be a pimp.

The best parts of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar are the use of foreign locations and some of the songs. Pritam seldom disappoints when it comes to composing a decent soundtrack. Almost all the songs are hummable, but I like "Tere Pyaar Mein '' the most.

Ranbir and Shraddha are at their effervescent best in the song, but their chemistry seems off right from the start. Ranbir is far from his "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" pomp, and his stock expressions come with an alarming sense of familiarity. Nevertheless, he does not sleepwalk through the movie and tries his best to make the scenes interesting. Shraddha Kapoor deserves some plaudits for hamming it up where necessary, but she does not have any chemistry with Ranbir on screen. Kartik Aaryan is a hoot in a cameo role. Anubhav Singh Bassi's Manu Dabbas is just a loud mouth. Dimple Kapadia plays her "TV serial ka aunty" role with a lot of sincerity.
