Butler brings a convincing humanity and vulnerability to his action movie heroics, thankfully avoiding the over-the-top machismo of such predecessors in the genre as Stallone and Schwarzenegger. The film, shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, ambitiously attempts to be more than a simple actioner.

It’s a good action and suspense film. Impressive set pieces include a car chase through a small-town bazaar, and a midnight shootout between Tom, outfitted with night-vision goggles, and a helicopter.

The action sequences are not gripping and the quiet moments are as subtle as a battering ram. Kandahar has an evocative aura that is lost on this middling film. All in all, you could watch it for Butler manfully trying to shoulder the burden of making the film work, or for Fazal’s helmet hair.
