Butler brings a convincing humanity and vulnerability to his action movie heroics, thankfully avoiding the over-the-top machismo of such predecessors in the genre as Stallone and Schwarzenegger. The film, shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, ambitiously attempts to be more than a simple actioner.

The action sequences are not gripping and the quiet moments are as subtle as a battering ram. Kandahar has an evocative aura that is lost on this middling film. All in all, you could watch it for Butler manfully trying to shoulder the burden of making the film work, or for Fazal’s helmet hair.
