Mata is not an usual run of the mill film, but at the same time it can not be called as a trend setter film.It is one of these films which entertain you in many sequences, but leave you with a tinge of disappointment many a times during the length of the film. You will have mixed feeling after you watch this film which has Kannada film industry's multiple talented actor Jaggesh. The actor who is also into politics now had almost decided not to take the acting profession seriously and was concentrating on developing his base in politics.Jaggessh who is extremely talented actor with a variety of advantages including a good comedy timing has chosen a good film as his hundredth film which is bound to be a hit with the audience. But try to scratch a little to ask yourself whether the film has given full justice to his talents. Then the answer is a simple no.

Mata which is directed by young debutant director Guru Prasad appeals for its unique and unconventional subject. The director has dwelled into various real life incidents that have occurred in the society and conveniently takes a dig at some of them exposing the double standards of the people. The director has rather intelligently interspersed some dialogues in the film which are some times straight, but it can also deliver some different meaning at times. A subtle message is also passed to the audience that it is better to earn your money for the food than to be a parasite depending on others.

The story of the film revolves around a religious Mutt where the chief pontiff relinquishes his post as he wants to get into a married life. The administrative officer (Parupattedaara of Mutt- the role played very well by Veteran actor Sudarshan) calls for application from eligible candidates for filling up the post and there are seven aspirants who want to take the post. All the seven candidates have different back grounds and are really good for nothing fellows. They have one agenda to somehow avoid work and get fed in the Mutt. Matadhipathi tries to select one of them and has his own selection process. . Then there is some differences among the aspirants and finally the hero takes the seat, much to the discomfiture of his opponents. Finally, the pontiff who had left his seat earlier comes back to occupy the seat.

Director Guru Prasad has won the half the battle Iin the film by selecting the most suitable artists for the roles in the film. All the artists who play the roles of the seven vagabonds lead the pack. Jaggesh comes out in flying colours in his role of Venkatesha. The film is a treat for Jaggesh fans. He has once again excelled in his comedy timing and a terrific dialogue delivery. The other competitors Mandya Ramesh, Biradar, Shashidhara Bhat are also good. Doddanna, Sudarshan, Sadhu Kokila have done well in the scope offered to them. .

Aswath's song is the highlight of the film and Music Director Manohar comes back in a fine fashion through this film. Even the re-recording work is perfect. Santhosh Rai Pathaje's camera work passes muster.
