Orapara Kalyana Vishesham Malayalam Movie

Feature Film | 2023
Critics:
This film narrates the tale of a group of youngsters who struggle to get married due to lack of government jobs. A poorly written screenplay based on a hollow plot rightly leads to the downfall even before the silly conflict is established.

A daring attempt at first glance, this film's seemingly absurd plot undermines its potential for watchability due to unimaginative execution. In "Orapara Kalyana Vishesham," writer-director Aneesh Puthanpura fails to instill hope for improvement as the characters meander through the screen, delivering repetitive dialogues. The film's main draw is its characters identified by their professions, yet the narrative, centered around a group of youngsters struggling to marry due to a lack of government jobs, is marred by a poorly crafted screenplay based on a hollow plot.

Opening with a family court scene and a catchy title song, the story revolves around five youths in the village of Vayannoor attempting to tie the knot. "Pilot" (Bhagath Manuel), a driver, is romantically involved with Devi (Shivani Bhai), a dancer. Their clandestine affair faces obstacles, with Pilot's profession hindering his relationship with Devi, the daughter of a retired school teacher.

A bachelor tire puncture shop owner (Sivadas Marampally), a painter known as "Colour" (Kailash), and Sukesh (Ashkar Soudan), who runs a catering furniture hire service, all grapple with the same marriage-related challenges. Despite being friends, the village's prevailing mindset among girls' parents is not to marry off their daughters to those lacking government jobs. Marriage brokers, along with the protagonists, regularly propose matches to adult girls' houses, only to face rejection when the lack of government employment is revealed.

While scenes of confusion among competing brokers waiting for their turn are initially humorous, this element remains confined to those moments. The clashes between brokers and suitors vying for the same girl provide occasional lighter moments but lack consistency. As the narrative progresses, "Orapara Kalyana Vishesham" devolves into a series of mundane and repetitive sequences.

The introduction of Sub Inspector Thrivikraman (Bheeman Raghu), responsible for finding girls for the men in the village, fails to inject intended humor or contribute significantly to the storyline's improvement. The lack of a compelling tale prevents the actors from elevating their performances, and the director's treatment of initial scenes sets the stage for the film's disappointing moments. Ultimately, the film falls short, unable to harness the potential of its actors with a weak script.
