Kannada films which had of late acquired an image of presenting below the belt films in the guise of youth oriented entertainers and gory violent films in the garb of gangster films has been saved by some good films like "Nenapirali' and "My Autograph' which have also been received well by the audience. Thankfully, the swords and knives have given way to roses and flowers these days in many films.
Crazy Star Ravichandran presents his new film "Hatavadi' which really augurs well for the industry in need of some good films to revive some glory that was seen in the post 2003 period."Hatavadi’ has shades of Ravichandran’s own life and his quest for achieving some big things in his profession.
Though Ravichandran’s journey as a star had a smooth ride, his transformation as an actor-director and actor-director-music director was not all that easy. His music was considered as one element which was instrumental in pulling down the quality of his films. But Ravichandran worked hard to erase this impression and in the post “Malla' phase, Ravichandran is considered as an all rounder of a great potential and his music has taken a top line.
"Hatavadi’ has incidents where the film's protagonist fights bravely a fatal decease and swallows many humiliations to achieve something he had dreamt off from his child hood.
"Hatavadi' has a strong emotional content and other commercial items like comedy and songs also form part of the narrative. But it is the emotional content which strikes a chord among the viewers and makes the film more appealing. Ravichandran uses the perfect visuals, good background score and shade lighting to convey the right mood for the film and enhances the impact.
It can be argued that the film's story lacks substance mainly because it has been conceived on a premise that two people who commonly interact with each other can not recognize their voices on phone. But this lacuna does not occur when the sequences of the film are being presented on the screen with a good narration. Some of the sequences in the film reminds you of Tamil films like "Mugavari' and "Payanangal Mudivadillai', Ravichandran has been able to come out with some new sequences. .
The story of ‘Hatavadi’ revolved around Balu who has been brought up by his poor but hardworking mother. Balu promises his mother that he would achieve something in life and he comes to Bangalore as a struggling singer. He lands up in a “Vatara'(a cluster of houses) and becomes a pet of those living in it. His helping nature and good behavior will bring him closer to many people. He comes across a rich girl Ashini who accidentally telephones him to tell her tale of story and thus starts a friendship of tele conversations. Ashini who is in search of happiness loathes the culture of parents who respect wealth and false prestige. She also accidentally meets Balu in person without realizing that he is the same person that she is speaking to over telephone.
Balu plays the double role of a friend and lover on the advice of his house owner. Then one day he gets giddiness and falls down after saving the life of a child. He is diagnosed for Brain Tumor. Despite knowing his fatal illness, Balu decides to achieve something and becomes the best known singer later. He faces many setbacks and insults, but he is able to make his dream true. He faces the threat of an imminent death very boldly and goes to his native village for a performance. At the end of his performance, he succumbs to his illness and dies.
Ravichandran comes out with a very good performance as Balu and he shows the right emotions. He also fights well in the film. Radhika makes a good impression with a high rated performance. Her emotions are perfect and she is presented very well on the screen in the songs. Doddanna has once again proved that he is an actor of high caliber.
