Maalik Movie Reviews
Maalik, a Hindi-language gangster drama set in the late-80s Allahabad, revolves around themes of power, violence, and class struggle. Despite Rajkummar Rao’s intense and committed performance, the film has largely disappointed critics. Across the board, the movie has been criticized for being predictable, uninspired, and riddled with clichés. The storytelling lacks originality, and the action-heavy narrative fails to offer emotional depth or novelty. While the lead actor brings energy and screen presence, it's not enough to redeem a script bogged down by overused tropes and unengaging execution. Some moments show flashes of potential, but they’re ultimately lost in an overlong and ultra-violent saga that doesn’t add anything new to the gangster genre. Even where the film attempts style, it lacks the substance to back it up. Supporting performances and setting offer glimpses of grit, but the direction and writing fall short of creating a memorable impact.
Verdict:
Maalik is a stylized but shallow gangster tale that fails to break new ground. Rajkummar Rao’s strong performance can’t save the film from its uninspired writing and repetitive structure. Watchable only for die-hard fans of the genre — and even then, with modest expectations.
