''Kumara Rama'' is a historical film made on the life and times of a 13th century chieftain of a small province called Kummatadurga in Karnataka. The warrior was not only known for his heroics and his patriotism, but he also stood for some values. Despite facing many personal problems, he stood out for values and at the same time made valiant efforts to save his province from usurpers.

The film is made at a huge cost by M.S. Pattabhiram, a well known educationist. Veteran Kannada film director Bhargava wields the megaphone. Bhargava returns to direction after a long gap and it is commendable that this senior director has put in lot of strenuous efforts to make his fiftieth directorial venture as the most memorable one. .

This film comes at the right time when Kannada film industry is really short of good products with original stories. We have either some good films which are essentially based on successful non Kannada films or violence and sex filled films of the gangster genre. Some badly made films released recently had also reflected on the depleting standard of Kannada films. But this historical film which is presented with all rich production values is not only a well documented presentation, but it also entertains with its high quality songs and hard hitting dialogues.

Kumara Rama is a valiant fighter who is son of Kampilaraja. Kampilaraja's province Kammatadurga is always under the attack of chieftains of Warangal. Kumara Rama braves all the attacks of his enemies.

He is in love with an aboriginal girl who later becomes his father's wife due to some circumstances. Though Rama takes this development as a fall out of destiny, the lady does not reconcile to her fate and tries to seduce Rama to be with her. But Rama stands out for morals and will be humiliated by his mother. Then he becomes the victim of his lover's tricks and Kampila Raja even orders for his execution.

But his look-alike brother sacrifices his life for him and then Rama wages battle against the onslaught of Thuglaq's army. He dies in the battle as a valiant fighter and his dignity is restored even in his death.

The efforts of all the artists and technicians of the film to take it to the heights of quality are really to be commended. Bhargava has been able to extract very competent performances from all the artists and equally top quality work from the technicians. The film has all the necessary ingredients required to make it appealing and entertaining. The dialogues, sharp editing, good art work and pleasing visuals are the plus points of the film.

Shivaraj Kumar excels in both of his roles and he has really shown the maturity required for the role. In at least three sequences of the film, he shows his brilliance as an actor. Srinivasa Murthy plays the Kampala's role with ease, while Veteran artists like Rajesh Bhatt, Seetha, C., R.Simha and Avinash stand out in their respective roles. The film's back ground music by Guru Kiran is also of high quality and the ''Gini Rama'' song is definite of topping the charts. Three songs of the film are well choreographed. Suvarna's camera work passes muster, while Soundara Rajan's editing is sharp. Lot of graphics work has been done for the film which is of good quality.
