CRITICAL RESPONSE

Nishaanchi marks a return to Anurag Kashyap’s familiar terrain of gang wars, betrayal, and family feuds. Critics agree that the film is gritty, raw, and packed with violence, earthy humour, and strong ensemble performances, including a noteworthy debut by Aaishvary Thackeray. Some highlight its retro-Bollywood feel, Salim–Javed style drama, and Kashyap’s flair for blending masala tropes with gangster storytelling. At the same time, multiple reviews point out the film’s shortcomings: it is overlong, occasionally drags, and often feels too familiar—drawing heavily on the shadow of Gangs of Wasseypur. The storytelling lacks freshness, and while there are wild moments and cheeky flourishes, the film sometimes misses its mark. Critics also note that the narrative’s start-and-stop rhythm dilutes the impact of its otherwise intense drama.

Verdict:

Nishaanchi is a bold, ambitious gangster saga that combines Kashyap’s signature grit with elements of retro drama. It impresses with its atmosphere, performances, and flashes of brilliance, but is let down by pacing issues, narrative familiarity, and an uneven execution. Fans of Kashyap’s world may find it engaging, but others may see it as a diluted version of his earlier triumphs.
