Anaatharu has two big stars of the Kannada film industry playing the roles which is completely in contrast with their on screen image. Upendra who made his mark in the Kannada film industry through his punch dialogues and very distinctive talking style does not speak a word in this film. And Darshan whose legs, hand did most of the talking in many of his films has the role of a chatterbox cheater. This film is a remake of Tamil Hit Pithamagan, which won the Best Actor award for its lead actor Vikram. Normally, remakes fail in comparison with the original in many counts. But in the case of Anaatharu it can be authoritatively said that the film stands well in comparison with the original largely in many segments of filmmaking.

It is certainly one of the best films of director Sadhu Kokila who has delivered a string of hits through his directorial ventures. He has been able to extract best out of his artists and technicians. Though he has not given tailor made roles to his lead artists, they have been able to deliver stand out performances.

Sadhu has followed the original faithfully and has effectively displayed his skills in doing remakes. His previous hit Raktha Kanneeru is also a remake. He has chosen perfect locations and the settings for the sequences and worked in tandem with his technicians to create the right ambience for the film. His cameraman Krishna Kumar also ably supports him. Though there are only three songs in the film (Sadhu is himself the music director of the film), the item song of Rambha and Upendra's bit song are well composed.

The story revolves around Rudra's friend ship with Satya and Ganja Parvathi. Three different characters with totally different upbringing. While Rudra has beastly attitude and suspects any invasion to his privacy, Satya is a professional cheat with a good gift of the gab. Ganja Parvathi works in an illegal Ganja farm meets Rudra accidentally and provides shelter to Rudra. Rudra is arrested by the police and sent to Jail. He meets Sathya and a bond of friendship develops between the two. Finally Rudra is made to work in the Ganja fields owned by a local don, and he does not know anything but to obey the orders of his boss. He is implicated in a murder and now it is the turn of Sathya to save him. What happen later are sheer bloodshed, violence and extreme emotional outburst of all the prime characters of the film.

Upendra is the best among the artists. His facial expressions, body language and mannerisms in the film are enough to tell the story of the whole film. Though he personifies extreme violence, there are many occasions where fans will enjoy his body language. Darshan impresses with his humor, though he could have put in a little more for this weighty role. Radhika is shades lower than Laila who played her part in the Tamil original. Sanghavi impresses in the role of Ganja Parvathi. Ramarajan is menacing as a villain. Rambha comes and goes out of the film in one item number dance.

Anaatharu is a must see film just for Upendra's performance and as much for the camera work of Krishna Kumar. KK proves yet again that he is the best cameraman of the Kannada film industry with his lighting work. . Shashi and Deepu's editing work is crisp. Ranganath's dialogues are well written.
