Gunavantha is one of the weakest films to be released in recent times. The timing is inappropriate as Kannada films are now heralding new heights of supremacy in the technical and story telling segments. It would be hard to digest that an actor like Nenapirali Prem who is seen as one of the contributors for the renaissance of the Kannada cinema is the lead actor in this film. It is better for Prem to choose his films with lot of circumspection in the future.

Gunavantha suffers from many factors including a contrived story, weak script, bad narration, inept characterization and mediocre music. Director Raghuvardhan has to take the major blame for the bad handling of the entire project. Raghuvardhan had made two lackluster films like Thimmaraayi and Badri earlier. At that time his name was Shivaji Rao. But Raghuvardhan has only effected a name change, but has not changed the way he directs the films. The film is full of major and minor mistakes that become visible in each sequence of the film. Gunavantha may be his third film, but quality wise it is much worse than his earlier two films which did lose heavily in the Box office. And the director shows his level by copying the cheap comedy sequences that are already seen in some Tamil films.

Raghuvardhan utterly fails in his attempt to give an action image to Prem who had so far acted in love oriented roles. That is because the film is sheer pain in the neck. Director Raghu and the dialogue writer Mandavya are totally ignorant about many things and have just imposed on audience nearly two hours of boredom. .

The story revolves around young and dynamic Guna whose sole ambition to construct a big house for older people. He is in love with college student Uma. Uma seeks Guna's guidance for everything. Guna and Uma witness an encounter which leads to the death of a rowdy who is brother of a local don Gold Krishna. Both Guna and Uma are threatened by the shooter with dire consequences if they reveal any information about this encounter. Meanwhile, Guna has also rubbed Gold Krishna by refusing to sell his site on which he is constructing the house for the elderly. Later Gold Krishna is told that Guna is responsible for the killing his brother. An enraged Krishna kills Guna's mother and creates disturbance even during the last rites ceremony. In the meantime, Uma's parents force their daughter to move out and forget her lover. Guna takes a revenge on Gold Krishna and others who are responsible for all his miseries.

Prem has not been able to salvage this film though he is slightly better as an actor. But the film's heroine Rekha has failed to deliver. It is pathetic to see many talented actors in the film giving very mediocre performances. Sharan's comedy is in poor taste and it is better for him to use his discretion in accepting roles. Rangayana Raghu over acts and it is irritating to see him doing cheap mannerisms. He takes the cake for his most irritating performance in this film. Even good artists like Avinash, Chitra Shenoy look so pathetic in the film.

Gunavantha has everything going against it starting from the first reel. It is perhaps the worst film of Prem who was showing signs of forward movement after his first two films. It is better for him to show extra care in selecting films.
