Director Bhoopathy Pandian is known for mixing comedy with action. He has done it again in "Malaikottai" with upcoming actor Vishal. An action hero, Vishal has for the first time, tried his hand at comedy too. And he acquits himself creditably. While the first half of the film is packed with romance and comedy, the later part is a high-voltage drama of action. Vishal has come a long away from "Sandakozhi" and "Thambaraparani" and one can see in him an uncommon passion which spurs him to keep improving his performance. Though the story is nothing much to speak about, Bhoopathy Pandian's sleight of hand , rollicking comedy and stunning action, breezy narration, Vaithi's camera and Mani Sharma's music make "Malaikottai" a racy commercial entertainer.

Here goes the story.

Anbu (Vishal) is a youth with no cares in the world. He is booked for creating trouble in Pattukottai and released on bail on condition that he report at the Malaikottai police station in Tiruchi and sign the register there. Sooner he comes to Malaikottai and he falls in love with Malar (Priyamani), a college girl, at first sight. To escape from his overtures, Malar lies to him that she is in love with a rowdy - Guna (Ajay), brother of the local villain - Palani (Devaraj) who is a terror in the town. When the rowdy, taking advantage of this, tries to seduce Malar, she tells the truth to Anbu. Enraged, Anbu thrashes the rowdy who goes into a coma. Villain Palani vows to take revenge on Anbu, but his plans were foiled by Anbu.

At the Malaikottai police station where Anbu comes to report, Inspector Kandasamy (Ashish Vidyarthi) takes him in as if to pulverize him, but it turns out that Kandasamy is Anbu's uncle (father's brother). This suddenly brings down the temperature. Kamala (Urvasi) is a constable and her romantic interludes with Inspector Kandasamy provide hilarious moments.

Anbu's overtures to Malar while she is feeding the crows and his face-to-face with Malar at her college are typical of the adolescent love. The theatre roars when Malar tells Anbu that she loves the rowdy Guna and Anbu walks up to Guna to wish him good luck. The pulsating action comes when Anbu takes on Guna on the college campus and fights the rowdies sent by Guna's brother Palani and sends them scurrying for cover.

Ponnambalam, Dandapani, Ashish Vidyarthi, Mayilsami and Urvasi contribute to making the film a rib-tickling thunder.

What a transformation for Priyamani, from a naive village girl in "Paruthiveeran" to a glitzy modern college girl. In dance sequences she proves she is match for any seasoned actress. What is remarkable is her dance for "Aatha Athorama Varriya…" which is an old song remixed by Mani Sharma.

Vishal combines comedy with action with ease. He shows promise of joining the big league. Kanal Kannan's stunts are a highlight. Vaithi's camera takes one on a picnic to Tiruchi. A film worth watching.
