Sathya has made several films basing his stories on many incidents related to the underworld activities. Most of his films with Darshan have proved successful and these films have helped the lanky actor to get a firm foothold in the industry.

For the first time, Sathya works with another young star Sudeep in the film 'Gooli' produced by Ramu and this film is also based on a gangster's life. But the difference in this film is that Sathya has been able to convey a strong message to the audience that it is better to lead a peaceful life than to hold a sword and threaten people.

The climax sequence of the film is the real saviour and the film will also be remembered for lead actor's Sudeep's fine tuned performance as Gangster Gooli. However Sathya could have really made it an unforgettable film like "OM' or "Jogi' if he had taken care to work on his script which has lose ends. And many striking continuity lapses also make the film much weaker. And the tedium sets in the beginning of the second half when the film drags and bore the audience. But for the last fifteen minutes of the film, the second half ends up as a big let down.

There are several lapses which are utterly laughable. Mamta Mohandas is injured on the forehead when she is attacked, but in a few sequences later she is seen with the stiches on her cheek. And Sathya who specialises in writing dialogues of the underworld has not made any distinction in allowing only a few characters to use it. Practically every other character has the same type of punch dialogues in their speech.

These mistakes apart, Sathya has also not taken care to select an appropriate cast for the film. His confidence in new music director Anoop has also not paid full dividends. Anoop has been able to compose two good songs, but they are certainly no match to the popular numbers like "Jinkemareena' or "Aithalakadi' mass numbers in other films.

Gooli is an underworld Don who takes contracts for many things. However his notoriety in the gangster trade and his helping nature to the poor and depressed are not much to the liking of his adversaries who try many times to eliminate him. But Gooli comes out a winner and also shows his human face many a times. He is liked by a rich college going girl Ramya who after several interactions with him decides to even marry him. Gooli warns her to keep away from him as his life is always in danger and both of them are poles apart in many respects. Sensing that Gooli is always being followed by Ramya, the rival gang members plan to kidnap her. Gooli saves her and then expresses her love to her. He decides to marry her, but an unexpected event happens. Finally in a stunning climax, all ends well.

Sudeep has excelled in his role of a gangster and has shown his class by his perfect emotions, dialogue delivery and body language. The film is really a one man show of his actign prowess. Mamta Mohandas could have worked little harder to prove her mettle in a complex role, but she is found wanting in many important sequences of the film. But she looks good in song sequences. Except for Kishor all the other artists have performed at just average levels.

On the technial side P.L.Ravi's camera work is not exceptional but sinks well with the sequences. Palani Raj's first two fights are well choreographed.

Gooli is a different type fo action film which could have reached greater heights with a little bit of fine tuning script work. But still it is a worth watch for Sudeep's acting prowess and his fights.
