Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu Movie Review
Debutante director Susindran comes up with a rather appreciable film in 'Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu', which has the ethnic game of Kabbadi as the backdrop. The film takes us to a village near Pazhani where there is a Kabbadi team that goes by the name Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu. This team of rustic lads has a passion for the game, but victory has always been a far off thing for them.
Marimuththu, a boy who lost his father at a young age, works as a goat-herd to earn a living. Though he has a passion for the game, he finds it difficult to join the team as he has to fight for subsistence. Anyway, the team works out a strategy to win at least once. They invite a rather poor team to play with them during the village annual festival, intending to beat them hollow in front of their village folk. But things don't go as planned because the visiting team hires professional players. Anyway, the Vennila team decides to fight it out. Marimuththu too joins the team and he proves himself to be rather good. But things go out of control and take a violent turn.
It's at this time, during the festival, that Mari happens to meet a young girl. Love blossoms between them. The story takes off after a professional coach, who has his own problems to tackle with, makes his entry. He sees the Vennila team getting defeated and then takes it upon himself to coach the team and lead them to victory. What follows forms the rest of the plot.
The highlight of 'Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu' is the execution of the theme. The rustic charm of the village and the spirit of the game of Kabbadi have been blended very skillfully and cinematically. Susindran has done a good job with the script, tending to be realistic on the whole. The thrill of the game of Kabbadi is retained in all respects. The element of drama too has been worked out well. Dialogues penned by Bhaskar Shakthi are catchy.
Kishore, who had won appreciation with 'Polladhavan', shines well as the coach, while Vishnu is good as Marimuththu. Saranya Mohan as the heroine too is good. The others in the cast also suit their roles well. Music by V. Selvaganesh is in sync with the mood of the film, while cinematography by J. Laxman is the one of the highlights of the film. Susindran's debut venture shows promises of a great innings in cinema.
