In fact, if you don't look for too much of cinematic brilliance and technical excellence and see it with an unprejudiced mind, Chithrashalabhangalude Veedu could be rather enjoyable.

Chithrashalabhangalude Veedu, if seen with a cynical bend of mind, may not seem that impressive. But if you look at it with an open mind you may even get to like the film. There is an element of goodness in it that's not seen much these days.

The film is centered around a bunch of schoolboys led by Kunjimuththu, who keep on creating trouble in the school. Most of the teachers and the headmaster want them out of the school.

Kunjimuththu, called Muththu in the film, is the son of an ex-naxalite named Kochutty, who brews illicit liquor for a living. Muththu helps his father in transporting the liquor. He is caught by the cops a couple of times, but the courts let him go because he is only a small boy. But when he is caught a third time, he is remanded to police custody, and in order to save his father, he takes the blame upon himself. He's out on bail soon, awaiting trial at the court.

The school authorities take this as the opportunity and dismiss him. But by that time a new teacher named Suja joins the school. She develops a better understanding of her students, especially Muththu. She sees to it that the boy is taken back into the school. Her influence transforms the boy, but there are things that still are beyond their control.

Master Ganapathy as Muththu is good and does justice to the role. Lakshmi Sharma as Suja teacher is also good. Shivaji Guruvayoor as the headmaster is his usual self, while T.S. Raju as Kochutty seems to be overdoing it a bit in some scenes. Manraj as Sethu, one of the teachers who is against Muththu and gang, is just about OK. The rest of the cast put in average performances.

Cinematography by Lal Kannan suits the mood and tempo of the film. And so does the background score by Sharreth. The songs, though not outstanding, jell with the subject and can very well be enjoyed. Chithrashalabhangalude Veedu is a film with a few messages to convey, and it does that without being too didactic.

There are scenes that could have turned out bad, but the script-writer and the director somehow manage to salvage it. In fact, if you don't look for too much of cinematic brilliance and technical excellence and see it with an unprejudiced mind, Chithrashalabhangalude Veedu could be rather enjoyable.
