Unpaused review

Unpaused

Hindi · 2020

'Unpaused' is an Amazon Prime anthology about how COVID-19 affects the lives of different kinds of people in Indian society. The stories that form it are different, but COVID-19 is the theme of all the shorts. We are going through an unprecedented period, and Unpaused just asks us to pause and reflect on it.

Oru Pakka Kadhai review

Oru Pakka Kadhai

Tamil · 2020

In Oru Pakka Kathai, Balaji Tharaneetharan aims for something deeper, more ethereal than a standard love story. It may be a high-concept film with much plot, but it does not live up to its initial promise. Nevertheless, the good-naturedness of the plot and characters make us watch it until the end.

Coolie No.1 review

Coolie No.1

Hindi · 2020

Coolie No. 1 is so cheesy that it belongs and should have only belonged to the 1990s. It is a remake of director David Dhawan's 1995 film of the same name. I have not seen that Govinda film, but I could still tell how ludicrous and problematic this Coolie No. 1 is.

AK vs AK review

AK vs AK

Hindi · 2020

With AK vs AK, Vikramaditya Motwane asks the audience to contemplate who among a filmmaker and movie star matters more to a film. Littered with filmy references, and fueled by two charismatic leads, this Netflix Original movie stays engaging throughout despite taking some risks along the way.

Paava Kadhaigal review

Paava Kadhaigal

Tamil · 2020

In Netflix's Paava Kadhaigal, Tamil cinema's four exceptionally talented directors deftly tackle themes of honor and pride in a patriarchal society. The anthology may not be an easy watch, but it has breathtaking moments, strong writing, and outstanding performances.

Torbaaz review

Torbaaz

Hindi · 2020

Girish Malik's film about cricket and refugees in war-torn Afghanistan works as a battle cry for peace. The movie has noble intentions, and a riveting Sanjay Dutt. However, it has issues with regards to messaging consistency, as well as lacks strong emotions.

Durgamati review

Durgamati

Hindi · 2020

Durgamati: The Myth has a clever story, but the hare-brained execution of the movie makes it hard for us to take anything in it seriously. It may not be an unwatchable film, but the makers should have tried to improve the script given that it is a remake.

Dexter review

Dexter

English · 2006

Barring the slightly disappointing 6th and 8th seasons, Dexter is an incredible series that will reward your time. Just the premise of the show itself is chilling and fascinating.

Andhaghaaram review

Andhaghaaram

Tamil · 2020

Much of Vignarajan's directorial debut film keeps us in the dark about what is happening to its characters. The multiple storylines never quite add up. Nevertheless, the makers have an eye for detail and style sense, which make Andhaghaaram barely watchable despite the ambiguity in it.

Chhalaang review

Chhalaang

Hindi · 2020

The thing with Hansal Mehta's 'Chhalaang' is not that the stakes are low in it. Any regular watcher of sports movies could see its resolution from a mile away. That it is not a proper sports movie makes it hard to believe what it says about India's sports education system.

Ludo review

Ludo

Hindi · 2020

What Anurag Basu tries to do in Ludo is something madcap, a comedy of manners. Not a lot in Ludo occurs organically, but self-awareness and eccentricity drive this colorful-looking tragicomedy.

Soorarai Pottru review

Soorarai Pottru

Tamil · 2020

For a story of a man with a will to fly and to give others wings to fly, Sudha Kongara's Soorarai Pottru takes time to take off. But the movie stays engaging throughout thanks mainly to a magnificent Suriya in the title role of Nedumaaran Rajangam.
