Babumoshai Bandookbaaz suffers the brunt of Censor scissors, gets 48 cutsAug 3, 2017 Abhishree Kulkarni
The recent film to face trouble with the censor board of India is Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s 'Babumoshai Bandookbaaz' which was given 48 cuts by the censor board led by Pahlaj Nihalani.
According to the reports the committee members also humiliated the producer of the film Kiran Shroff by questioning her on how despite being a woman she could. produce a movie with such explicit scenes.
Kiran voiced out her opinion in an interview saying, “They had an internal discussion for an hour after the screening. First, they told us that they were giving us an A certificate. Then they told us that there are 48 cuts. We argued that if the film is for adults, then why have so many cuts. They didn't bother much, and continued to explain each cut and their logic behind it. In the middle of that, a lady officer turned to me and said, 'Aap aurat hokar aisi filmein kaise bana sakti hain'. And before I could speak up, a man in the committee said, 'But she is not a woman. Look at what she is wearing.' I was dumbfounded. This is such a regressive thought.”
Kiran and director Kushan Nandy have also approached FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal) for a revision in the issued cuts.
Ashoke Pandit from the IFTDA also showed his support and said, “Many directors have joined hands against this. We condemn the lack of freedom of expression. The CBFC members cannot behave like this and get away with it. It's attacking the dignity of a female producer. And this shows the kind of people Mr Nihalani has hired in the committees. It needs to be exposed.”
In a letter addressed to the director the CBFC has mentioned cuss words, kissing and intimate scenes and dialogues that it wants removed from his film. The cuts issued by CBFC are sure to take away the raw and realistic appeal of the film.
The team has decided to stand against the decision of CBFC firmly and we can only hope they get justice for their film.
