Benedict Cumberbatch roped in to play lead in Marvel's 'Doctor Strange'
Oct 28, 2014 NRMarvel has roped in "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch to play the title character in their long-awaited film "Doctor Strange".
The British actor was first reported to be on Marvel's wish list some months ago, but then Joaquin Phoenix was approached for the role. Ultimately, Phoenix wouldn't commit to a multi-film contract. Names like Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Ethan Hawke and Keanu Reeves were also thrown into the mix.
Cumberbatch comes with an incredibly large fan base thanks to his Sherlock show and impeccable dramatic cred. And with The Imitation Game shaping up to be a major awards contender this season, a best actor nomination (or more) could also be on his curriculum vitae.
There's no deal yet in place for Cumberbatch, and his commitment is contingent on juggling his schedule filming the fourth season of Sherlock. The BBC series previously accommodated Sherlock's Dr. Watson, Martin Freeman, so he could film The Hobbit trilogy.
centers on a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Doctor Strange made his first appearance in the Marvel Universe more than 50 years ago, and was first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange and Jon Spaihts is writing the script for the pic (the first draft was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer). Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing.
