Cinematographer Priyan passes away

Cinematographer Priyan passed away yesterday, the 9th November after suffering a heart attack at his residence in Chennai. He was 55. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.


He was a native of Virudhunagar and began his journey in the film industry by assisting legendary cinematographer-director Balu Mahendra. He had worked with Balu Mahendra in films like Moondram Pirai, Olangal, Sadma and Yathra. His first film as a lead cinematographer was KS Adhiyaman’s Thotta Chinungi in 1995 after which he collaborated with top filmmakers of Tamil cinema.


He was director Hari’s favorite cameraman and had worked in 13 of Hari’s films. Currently he was also handling the camera for Hari’s upcoming film Saamy Square, which has Vikram and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles. Vikram in his social media post mentioned, “Mere words cannot fully express the sorrow I feel after hearing about the sudden passing away of Priyan.. One of the sweetest people I have ever met in my life. It’s a huge loss for everyone who has been touched by this gentle person. May his soul rest in peace.”
