Drama song that stood test of time in film!

Evergreen songs have riveting tales behind their birth. One such song is “Kalpaantha kaalatholam” sung by Yesudas. In fact, it was written for a drama, directed by Sreemoolanagaram Vijayan, who is also the lyricist of this song.

The song was actually written for the play to be staged by Perumbavoor Natakasala. But Vijayan was unhappy with the song’s music composed by the drama’s music director. One day he happened to listen to the music of composer Vidyadharan Master, who was composing songs for plays at that time.

It took no time for Vijayan to approach Vidyadharan. But this time Vijayan requested the musician to compose it for a film to be directed by him, instead of the planned drama. So, “Kalpaantha kaalatholam” was included in the black &white film ‘Ente Gramam,’ starred by Soman. After a few years, the film was finally released in 1984.

It became the film debut of Vidyadharan as a music director. The song, which has the Malayalam consonant “Ka” at the beginning of each line, still stands high as one of the evergreen songs of Malayalam Cinema.

Vidyadharan went on to compose so many super hit songs, including “Nastaswargangale” (‘Veenapoovu’), “Vinninte virimaaril” (‘Ashtapadi’), “Chirikkal” (‘Adayalangal’) and “Thaalolam paithal” (Ezhuthappurangal) to name a few. He has also sung for films like ‘Kathavaseshan’, and ‘Thanneer Mathan Dinangal’ etc. Click the Movie button below for more info:
