'Ek Duuje Ke Liye' director K. Balachander cremated
Dec 24, 2014 NRLegendary Tamil film-maker K. Balachander, who had directed Hindi movies like 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye' and 'Zara Si Zindagi', passed away on 23rd Dec, and he was cremated in Chennai today (Wednesday).
He succumbed after prolonged illness at a private hospital in Chennai on Tuesday, leaving scores of fans and fraternity members bereaved. He was 84.
Actress-politician Jayaprada, who worked with him in five films, said he was an "institution".
Kamal Haasan, who was busy with the post-production work of his Tamil film "Uttama Villain" in Los Angeles, boarded his flight from California earlier in the day. Hence, he won't be able to pay his homage to the auteur.
"Kamal sir is expected to reach Chennai tonight. He will go meet Balachander's family and pay his respects", his manager said.
Balachander, who launched Haasan in 1973 Tamil film "Arangetram", went on to work with the actor in over 40 films, including hit Hindi romantic-drama "Ek Duuje Ke Liye".
Balachander was also instrumental in launching the careers of superstar Rajinikanth and other popular actors like Prakash Raj.
Bollywood director Madhur Bhandarkar tweeted after hearing the sad news: Sad to know of d demise of K Balachander. A genius storyteller, his gems Ek Duje Ke Liye & Zara Si Zindagi will keep his legacy alive. RIP.
