'Game Of Thrones' shooting causes chaos in Spain

Game Of Thrones fever has taken over Spain.

Game of Thrones descended on the small town of Osuna in Spain this week, and locals turned out in droves in the hope of being part of a key battle scene being filmed on location.

The show normally shoots in Northern Ireland and Croatia, both of which have enjoyed boosts in tourism, with the former even getting a visit from the Queen recently.

During an open casting call for a “Game of Thrones” battle scene, 86,000 people showed up looking to be extras. The local production company, Fresco Film, even needed to up its server space to accommodate the high number of applications.

Many of the fans hoping to be a part of GoT history needed the money, but one applicant, according to Entertainment Weekly, took holiday from his high-level banking job to feature in the show.

Game of Thrones is set to be a rare bit of good economic news for Spain. The show is creating thousands of jobs, hotels in Osuna are fully booked until the show wraps at the end of the month, and local restaurants have even created special menus in honor of the show.

Previously, the show shut down a major tourist attraction in Seville, the Alcázar palace, to film scenes at House Martell, and drew flocks of crowds to its gates. Even scammers are getting in on the action: Two men in Ibiza reportedly ran a fake casting website for extras that bilked hopefuls of up to $127,000 in just one week.

The tourism center also recently extended its hours to accommodate the thousands of fans in town to catch a glimpse of production.

Game of Thrones season 5 has yet to be given a release date, but will arrive in 2015.
