Kamal Haasan says he has to quit films if GST is 28%

Jun 3, 2017 JB

The recent announcement of the Central Government that the entertainment industry will be levied a 28% GST, has put the Tamil industry in a tough situation. There are various forums which are trying to bring this rate down.

Kamal Haasan who had a media interaction on this issue appears to be totally peeved by this. He was quoted as saying, “If the GST is as high as 28%, it is going to ruin the regional film industry. I really think 12% was ideal and my kindest request is to consider bringing it down. I will quit cinema if these extremely high GST rates are not brought down by the government.

It has to be noted that we are Kollywood and they cannot charge us at Hollywood standards. This 28% is not healthy for the growth of Tamil cinema which might perish at this rate. Cinema is not like gambling, it is an art. So I request the government to look into this issue and reduce the GST.”
